Heineken Malaysia’s “Sip and Savour” at Lavo

Recently attended an exclusive beer and food pairing experience organised by Heineken Malaysia Berhad (HEINEKEN Malaysia) entitled “Sip and Savour” at Lavo at Menara Lien Ho in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya. The series was a collaboration with some of Heineken Malaysia’s selected restaurant partners (The BAR°N Wine Bar, SOULed OUT Kuala Lumpur, and Lavo Restro Wine Atelier), featuring HEINEKEN Malaysia’s signature lagers, stouts and ciders paired with specially curated menus for the upcoming festive season.

“We want to show our consumers how our lagers, stouts, and ciders are much more than refreshing drinks on their own. Thanks to our valued restaurant partners and the insightful guidance of our Culinary and Beer expert, Thomas Ling, consumers can now experience these delectable beer and food pairings throughout this festive season at The BAR°N, SOULed OUT, and Lavo. Beer has a place at the dinner table, and we want to help spread the love for beers and ciders, as well as showcase the diverse options when it comes to pairing,” said Renuka Indrarajah, HEINEKEN Malaysia’s Corporate Affairs & Legal Director.

Thomas Ling, renowned Culinary and Beer expert, shared, “Beer and Food have brought people together for centuries now. With the year-end festivities approaching, we want diners to have a truly exceptional experience enjoying the right beer paired with the right food. The pairings selected here show how lagers, stouts, and ciders can cut, contrast, complement, and cleanse the palate in their own way.”

Thomas Ling leading us through the tasting

“The carbonation, alcohol and hops from beer ‘cut through’ the flavours and textures on your taste buds; for instance, the classic lager and pizza pairing or cider and creamy pasta. Beer can also complement similar flavours and characteristics in food. That is why stout goes perfectly with the smoky char on the grilled meat. At the same time, beer and food can create a contrast pairing, bringing out unique characteristics in both your pint and your plate. An example of a good contrast pairing is oysters and stout. You can also use your beer to cleanse your palate. For example, you can use the cool and refreshing flavour of lager beer to wash down the heat of fried chicken”, he added.

The Lavo Kitchen team had this to say: “We are thrilled to share our tantalising Asian-Western Fusion menu together with some of HEINEKEN Malaysia’s signature beers and ciders. Here at Lavo, we strive to bring guests a carefully curated visual feast that will entice you to relax and unwind in style and comfort along with great company. Cider fans will cheer the night as we kick off the evening with our crispy Truffle Fries paired nicely with the refreshing Strongbow Gold Apple Cider. Guests will also find out how effortlessly their favourite lagers cut through our mouth-watering Char Kuey Teow, Salted Egg Chicken Bites, and Say Cheese Pizza.  To end the evening with a bang, guests can enjoy our signature Lavo Meat Platter with the more fullbodied aromas of Kilkenny and Guinness for that extra oomph!”

I’ve been drinking Guinness and attending Guinness events for over a decade now… with some of the fondest memories being Arthur’s Day with the Black Eyed Peas in Sunway Lagoon a good 10 years ago. Over the years, I’ve also done multiple food pairings with Guinness, most memorably being the Guinness dinner with Masterchef Australia Season 2 – Adam Liaw (read more here – https://timchew.net/2011/12/04/merry-guinness-masterchef-australia-adam-liaw/).

Last year, my first exposure to a multi-brand tasting was when I attended Heineken Malaysia’s food pairing at the Worldchefs Congress & Expo 2018 (read more here – https://timchew.net/2018/07/17/editors-note-july-2018/) which was more of a standing affair featuring a multi-brand tasting and pairing.

This was my first sit down dinner featuring some of the brands under Heineken Malaysia which includes Tiger, Heineken, Strongbow, Kilkenny and Guinness. It turned out to be quite an enjoyable affair where we got to mix and match the different brews with the different dishes. My least favourite pairing was the pizza with Heineken, while my favourite was the Salted Egg Chicken Bites with the Kirin Ichiban.

Realme Malaysia launched its latest realme 5s in Malaysia on 12 December 2019. This latest offering from Realme comes with a 48MP AI Quad Camera and 5000mAh battery, which the brand claims will offer users a flagship level ultra-high definition photography experience and strong battery performance.

“Since the launch of realme 5 series recently in Malaysia, it was very well received by Malaysians as we’ve also received many positive reviews. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that realme 5 is the first product in its price range with a quad-camera feature that provides users with a greatly enhanced and superb multi-scene and multi-function imaging experience. This time around, we see realme 5s as a major leap-forward in its price segment with an all-new upgraded design and improved features. It combines the cultivation of innovative feature and design along with thoughtful performance capabilities that allow our fans to continuously pursue their passions without limitation,” said Tiffany Teh, Brand Manager of realme Malaysia.

This time around, realme has further upgraded the camera system with a whole new 48MP AI Quad Camera configuration. Compared with its predecessor realme 5, the newly upgraded 48MP AI quad-camera can take photos four (4) times clearer as it adopts the ISOCELL GM1 sensor that provides resolutions as high as 8000×6000. In well-lit settings, realme claims that the camera can capture highly-detailed pictures that look natural and vivid even when zooming and cropping.

The realme 5s also supports other innovative imaging functions, including Super Nightscape 2.0 and ChromaBoost. These features are combined with AI technologies and upgraded ISP (Image Signal Processor) and Spectra 165.

The realme 5s is able to record up to 4K-resolution videos through its 119° wide angle lens. Additionally, it also supports slow-motion videos in 240fps and 720P resolution.

Performance-wise, the phone is powered by an 11nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 AIE processor along with a 5000mAh massive battery, providing a pretty superior battery life compared to the other phones in the market. The phone is equipped with a 6.5-inch big screen, offering a larger field of view as well as providing a better gaming, audio and video experience. It also allows the user to enjoy a wider field of view brought by the large screen with a less visual disturbance while giving users a near-full screen experience.

Aesthetically, realme 5s features the classic holographic colour pattern with diamond cutting design which makes it pretty outstanding. The realme 5s is priced at RM799 (for the 4GB RAM + 128GB ROM variant) and will be available in Crystal Blue and its latest colour, Crystal Red.

‘Sharing For Love Christmas Special’ Lunch at The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Headed over to The Saujana Hotel on 7 December 2019 for the hotel’s ‘Sharing For Love Christmas Special’ lunch, which is a CSR event organized by the hotel in support of Living Hope Global – a nonprofit charity organization (NGO) that was founded by Dr. Peggy Wong. Established in May 2007 as a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative to raise both awareness and resources to underprivileged children, the organization understands the plight of many young ones and brings much needed help in terms of donations towards the feeding, clothing and education programmes that Dr. Wong has set up through Living Hope Global. She firmly believes that education is the one and only way out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

Living Hope was later registered as an NGO under Registrar of Societies in Malaysia as of 16th March, 2012. This will enable Living Hope to reach out to many more poor, needy and marginalized children in Malaysia and internationally.

The lunch party held at Charcoal Restaurant, was graced by Dr. Peggy Wong herself who was accompanied by her husband, Mr. Wong, along with the Living Hope Global Committee. They were joined by Mr. Philip See, CEO from Firefly Airlines, former Malaysia Airlines Quality Assurance Manager, Mr. Kavil Singh, his wife Mrs. Indarrsh Singh, retired senior from Alliance Bank, Encik Din, and the Senior Management team from The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

The main guests of the event of course comprised of the 40 children from invited schools including; SK La Salle Jinjang 2, HiiChiiKok Foundation Home, Destiny Home Klang and the Myanmar Learning Centre, Bandar Sunway. They were accompanied by their diligent teachers as well as care takers that afternoon.

The restaurant was festively decorated with colourful helium balloons set up in fascinating archlike shaped design, mirroring the same feeling one would get when entering a carnival or theme park. ‘That Little Effort’, a home-based balloon’s supplier founded by Ms. Hazira Hanapi, creatively accessorized all the balloons and décor in addition to the Super Stuffer – 5 huge air-inflated balloons carrying gifts with glitters inside where a child would need to pop the balloon in order to get to the gifts. This was certainly a favorite highlight for the children there who were all eager and excited to answer the pop quiz questions correctly to get their chance to pop the Super Stuffer for the prize as their reward. Ms. Hazira said she was proud to give back and be a part of such a noble cause with The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

The Jazzy Carolers from Putera Aman Assembly Church serenaded us guests with Christmas carols, bringing the joyful spirit of the season of giving. This is the second show by the band at The Saujana Hotel who has been supporting similar Christmas events since two consecutive years, as led by Pastor Bryan.

Guests at the lunch event were treated to a selection of local and international cuisine prepared by the dedicated team of chefs from Charcoal, led by the restaurant’s Executive Chef, Chef Alex Chin.

Exciting activities were organized such as entertaining games by Mr. John, Santa Claus’s special appearance that brought excitement to the children and presents, chocolates and candy giveaway with photo taking opportunity with Santa.

The highlight of the afternoon was the delightful string of performances by the children from all schools. The many talents of students were evident through their show that first started with SK La Salle 2 Jinjang performing to a delicate Malay dance called, ‘Tarian Inang Bunga-bunga Di Taman’.

This was followed by a rhythmically moving dance number by the children from Destiny Homes Klang with an entertaining Tamil song. HiiChiiKok Foundation Home later showcased their talent with a unique song title called ‘Little Apple+Gentleman’.

The cute little ‘rugrats’ from Myanmar Learning Center were the last performers in the talent show segment from the schools and they were as young as 4 and 5 years old. They sang and performed to a Myanmar language Christmas song that brought tears and joy to the eyes of some of the guests who were so captivated by their adorable appearances.

Jotun Paints Malaysia, Firefly Airlines, and GoGo Empire were some companies that generously contributed funds and support for the event, along with donations received from internal staff at The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur, as well as external individuals who wanted to do their part by giving to this charity event.

The afternoon ended with prize and appreciation certificate giveaways. All 40 children were presented with school bags and large goodie bags that were all filled with coloring and reading books, stationaries, key chains, soft toys, stickers, clays, piggy (savings) bank, and lots of chocolates and candies in addition to that that was given by Santa Clause earlier. The excitement seen on the faces of these children upon presenting their gifts was priceless.

Dr. Peggy Wong closed the ceremony by saying a few words and expressing her pleasant surprise and sincere gratitude to The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur for going through such great extent in making this CSR event happen. Dr. Wong also shared that these children have never before dined or celebrated an event in this magnitude at any hotels, let alone a five-star hotel like The Saujana Hotel Kuala Lumpur. She was moved by the compassion and kindness shared to make these children happy during this Christmas season.
