I remember the early days when I first started hanging out for drinks with my friends in bars. The choice of beers was pretty limited to just one or two brews and no imported beer at all. Now I’m not a really picky drinker but it’s nice to have some variety every now and then instead of drinking the same brand each and every time.

How the scene has changed since then as our local brewers and distributors have started to expand their portfolios by bringing in new brands for Malaysian consumers. One of the brands that entered the Malaysian market a couple of years back was Kronenbourg 1664 which is owned by the Carlsberg Group and brought in by Carlsberg Malaysia back in December 2010 to expand its portfolio of beers. Starting off with just the lager variant first, the brand received acceptance in the Malaysian market and it was no surprise that the Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc wheat beer variant (which proved to be a great hit among the fairer sex) was launched a couple of months later in June 2011.

Since the launch, Kronenbourg 1664 has been exposing Malaysian consumers to the French way of life namely – food, fashion and enjoyment. This has been communicated through a series of consumer and media engagements including Kronenbourg 1664’s signature event L’Aperitif Fashion which is like a Malaysian version of Project Runway, being the official beer of the BMW WTA Open and STYLO, a series of wonderful fine dining food pairings, and most recently their Cinq à Sept campaign which is all about having good work/ life balance.

Kronenbourg 1664 has a long brand history however I’ve mentioned it many times before on this site so I won’t repeat myself, therefore if you’d like to know more about the brand or read about their previous events and campaigns you can head over here – https://timchew.net/category/drinks/kronenbourg-1664/

Anyway back to the topic at hand.

In today’s fast paced life, and especially if you life and work in the city, you’re most likely to experience some form of stress – be it traffic jams, work stress, having to work long hours or overtime on a regular basis, boss yelling at you, kids screaming, the list goes on and on…

Well to give you a little break from the hum drum of life, Kronenbourg 1664 has come up with ‘Taste the French Way of Life’ which is a brand new thematic campaign aimed at giving you and your friends some enjoyable, memorable yet simple experiences.

I bet everyone who is working or even studying faces some or all of these.

The French are known to really enjoy their life, while (a lot of urban) Malaysians on the other hand are quite career and work-driven, striving from morning till late evening to make a good living for themselves and their family.

While I won’t say that one culture is better than the other, somewhere in between is where Kronenbourg 1664 wants you to be with “Taste the French Way of Life”- achieving a good work/ life balance.

After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Conversely all play and no work is not sustainable for long unless you’re born with a silver spoon in your mouth and have like a RM10,000,000 inheritance. Or you’re a girl who married a millionaire.

In any case, the majority of us normal folk have to work to make ends meet and Kronenbourg 1664 has come up with a series of events to make us really look forward to Fridays!

Kicking off the series was the Kronenbourg 1664 Rooftop BBQ party at Stratosphere, The Roof, First Avenue Bandar Utama on 8 August 2014.

The party was timed to start at 6.00pm which is knock off time for workers! Hurrah!

Malaysia’s Hottest Bloggers’ Kelly Siew and Jiayeen were the first to join me there so we chilled over some ice-cold Kronenbourg 1664 beers (I took lager while the girls took the Blanc variant), taking pics, lounging on the sofas and watching the sunset while the smell of food on the BBQ wafted through the air making us hungry.

Stephanie and Kate soon joined us and we shared the latest on what was happening in our lives. Stephanie, Kate and Jiayeen were all students when they first joined MHB and now all three of them are OLs (Office Ladies) while Kelly has been working for many years now so all five (5) of us really understood what Kronenbourg 1664 was trying to achieve as Malaysians can sometimes be so caught up in work that they forget to appreciate the finer and simpler things in life – friendship, togetherness and quality moments.

Walking around the helipad, I took the opportunity to snap some photos of the Kronenbourg 1664 promoter girls in their new uniforms as well as observe what some of the guests were up to. Girls were taking selfies as usual and there’s something that might assist them with this in the future. More info at the bottom of this post.

I spotted this fun fair machine and decided to release my stress and tention and also to test my strength by bashing the hammer down on the machine. Grrr! Totally felt like Thor and was fairly satisfied as I managed to hit 13 out of a scale of 16!

I like the lager variant for its rich taste however the girls understandably preferred the more fruity Blanc variant. Well to each his own I say!

Henrik J. Andersen, Managing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia joined us for a beer and explained that Kronenbourg 1664's “Taste the French Way of Life’ campaign was to champion the art and beauty of work-life balance by simply treasuring good conversation and company. Couldn't agree more!

Henrik later went up on stage for a short speech and the launch gambit which involved his using the gas gun (which you will see quite frequently in PLAY) to blow away all your worries

Then it was time for dinner! BBQ chicken wings, sausages, roast lamb, pasta, potato wedges and even marshmallows along with a whole lot more dishes were in the buffet line!

We even managed to persuade MHB's resident professional songbird Kelly Siew to join them for a number! Turned out that she actually performed with the keyboardist previously so this was a walk in the park for her.

Always nice to hear her sing though and she got the crowd singing along to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”.
Everyone was chilling and enjoying themselves with the food, beers and entertainment. So happened that it was a nice and breezy night too which added to the overall ambience!

So I think Kronenbourg 1664 really covered all the bases for a good BBQ:

Setting/ venue – enjoying the cool breeze and watching the sunset from 29 storeys up in the sky – Check!

Food – delicious lamb, chicken wings, sausages, pasta, and even marshmallows! Check!

Drinks – ice-cold Kronenbourg 1664 lager and Blanc. Check!

Entertainment – live band, fun party games, flipbook wall, high striker/ strength tester game, fire dancer. Check!

Company/ friends – pretty brand ambassadors and having your friends there to party with you! Check!

All the ingredients necessary for a fun and memorable party and honestly I really did enjoy myself chilling on the sofa with a beer in hand, munching on chicken wings, and chatting with my bloggers and friends. What more could you ask for on a Friday evening?
