Headed over to SS15 in Subang Jaya on 19 August 2014 for the launch of IKU Japanese Fusion Sushi restaurant in SS15, Subang Jaya. This new Japanese fusion restaurant is located right opposite Asia Cafe and same row as the Starbucks outlet.
IKU means “to go; to visit” in Japanese and “行” in Chinese, and IKU Japanese Fusion Sushi is all about healthy “fast food” to cater fast paced lifestyle, giving consumers an alternative to the normal types of fast food which is mainly Western cuisine.
On IKU’s menu is everything from fusion sushi to special signature bento box sets to hand rolls, and differs from normal Japanese restaurants by having their special fusion sauces to go along with the dishes. One of their signature dishes is the cold soba called “Soba In A Box” where your soba is served in a box, and you can choose from 8 varieties of sauces and 29 condiments to accompany your noodles.
Heading the kitchen is Chef Yama, apprentice of Mr.Michihiku Sakakuchi-san, a Master Chef in New York. Chef Yama has over 20 years of working experience under his belt, and his creativity has gained rave reviews from newspapers in USA, and even drawn attention from Chef Jorge Rodriguez, one of America’s Top 20 Chefs.
Chef Yama has created 10 special sauces to go with the sushi and bento box sets at IKU, apart from the traditional soy sauce and wasabi which you can also opt to have like I did (I love wasabi and those who have accompanied me for Japanese food will know that I eat so much of it until I’m tearing). Where is the fusion you ask? Well Chef Yama explained, “The fusion element is in the sauce. I’ve made 10 different sauces that can all go along well with just a piece of salmon“.
The food is delicious and reasonably priced probably due to the fact that this restaurant is located near the colleges in SS15. Presentation does look slightly messier than what you may be accustomed to in normal Japanese restaurants however the taste is really what matters in IKU and I really enjoyed the sushi, handrolls and especially the soba.
I’m quite the adventurous eater so I really enjoyed the new twists of the various sauces on the sushi, sashimi and rolls. Didn’t get to taste the ramen or the rice bento sets as I was too full but if it’s the same quality as the sushi then it should be just as delicious.
Psst! The outlet is having a special opening promotions on food items for a limited time so make sure you head over soon!
