Thanks to the nice folks at The Roof, I’ve actually visited the newest and hottest multi-concept eatery and entertainment hub in the Klang Valley three (3) times in the span of less than two (2) weeks that it has been open (you can read more here – https://timchew.net/2013/11/04/preview-soft-launch-of-the-roof-first-avenue/).
This visit which is my 4th, coincided with a little pre-birthday dinner with my partner in crime and I thought dining with an incredible view would be one very memorable birthday dinner indeed so over we went to The Roof at First Avenue Bandar Utama for dinner at Signature by The Hill.
Signature by The Hill (yes The Hill in Damansara Heights) is The Roof’s gastro-lounge and bar and features two (2) distinct sections namely the restaurant section which has low tables and sofas and is more conducive for eating, and the bar section with high tables and chairs, and also some sofas which is great for drinks and some light bites. You can check out Andy Kho’s photos on the Malaysia’s Hottest Bloggers Facebook page for more photos of the outlet – https://www.facebook.com/myhotbloggers

A pic of us with Dax and Belinda from Tattler magazine. Check out the LED screen above the bar which plays changing graphics throughout the night adding a modern and stylish ambience to the bar section.
We opted for a table by the window which offered an awesome view of TTDI, Damansara Utama and beyond. The restaurant section is dimly lit on purpose to allow customers to enjoy the view outside. Seems like the place is pretty popular among those who are celebrating birthdays as throughout the night we heard at least three (3) birthday songs!
Watermelon Slush (vodka + midori + lychee liqueur + watermelon) RM40.00 – one of The Hill’s most recognisable cocktails! I mean how could you miss half a watermelon? This was really refreshing and easy to drink so much so that you don’t taste the alcohol inside.
I had a glass of Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve on the rocks – RM24.00
Signature Mushroom Soup – RM19.00 – with truffle oil, sautéed chanterelle mushrooms, blended trio of wild mushrooms, and creme. By now I’m sure you know that I really really really like a good mushroom soup. This one is one of the better ones that I’ve tried and the piece of garlic toast was very delicious too especially when dipped into the soup. The soup was not overly creamy and seasoned just right.
Mario’s Mushrooms – RM18.00 – trio of mushrooms sautéed in white wine, garlic, butter, and served with toast bread. Now you must eat the mushrooms with the toast bread as it’s well-seasoned. This is a savoury dish that I think will go very well with beer! It was quite nice biting into the mushrooms that were cooked just right so much so that they were not too soft or hard!
Signature Grilled Salmon – RM48.00 – finished by baking in special house batter, served with vegetable stack, Romesco, and side salad. This grilling then baking resulted in two (2) different textures for the salmon. The inside was remarkably moist and tender while the skin was crispy! Loved the fact that this dish was not smothered in a cream sauce but instead served with a delicious Romesco sauce which lent a little spiciness to the dish.
Black Angus Tenderloin – RM88.00 – served with pumpkin mash, garlic chocolate, arugula, and sautéed seasonal vegetables. Ok the dish doesn’t look like my pic here as the tenderloin was covered in the arugula but for photography purposes I tossed a lot of it to my partner in crime’s plate (she loves vege) so that you could see the lovely tenderloin. Cutting it open I was surprised that they actually almost got it medium rare (most restaurants overcook my steaks) which was certainly a plus point! Dipped the steak into the sauce and put it into my mouth and I was like what the? Chocolate? (OK I didn’t really read the details of this dish properly before I ordered it.) That was a surprise! But amazingly it tasted quite nice…of course I may be biased as I do like chocolate. There’s lot of brown sauce to go with the flavourful steak if you’re not into garlic chocolate sauce. As I was with my partner I didn’t really eat much of the garlic though. The pumpkin mash was creamy while the arugula lent some earthy slightly bitter to the dish balancing it out nicely!
Creme Brulee in 3 styles! Original, coffee, and serai (lemongrass) & ginger flavours! I actually liked the serai and ginger one as it has a wonderful aroma as well as a nice ginger taste that was not too overpowering. My partner in crime though liked the coffee one (no surprises here as she’s a real coffee fan).
Terrazas Chardonnay – RM22.00 per glass or RM120.00 per bottle.
Another year older = another year wiser I hope!
A pic with the was tree that was designed to resemble “Eywa” aka the big glowing blue tree in the movie Avatar.
After dinner we made our way up to Stratosphere for some champagne and to enjoy the beautiful 360 degree view of Damansara and Petaling Jaya. The only lighting at Stratosphere comes from the furniture which glows in different colours. This is to prevent light pollution and enables visitors to better enjoy the view of the KL skyline.
Set your camera correctly and you’ll capture the ambient light from the background.
All in all it was a memorable night. On the way back I bumped into quite a few people I know which is no surprise as we folks in PJ/ Damansara have been waiting a long time for more quality outlets to open in the area. If you’re planning to go up to Stratosphere do note that it’s entirely open air up there therefore it will be closed if it’s raining however you can still get a great view from either Signature by The Hill (sit in the restaurant section) or Malt & Leaf (the cigar and whisky bar).
Prices stated are subject to the prevaling tax rate.
Signature by The Hill, and Stratosphere are part of the multi-concept entertainment hub that is The Roof which is located at:
