[Casual Dining Spots]
A couple of months ago I brought the girls from MHB over to Chulo Restaurant & Bar for a review of the outlet (you can read about that here – https://timchew.net/2013/04/03/food-review-chulo-restaurant-bar/) but at that time the menu was still a work in progress.
Finally after months of trial and tweaking after getting feedback from customers they have a new menu created by their chef who has previously worked in the Four Seasons Sydney.
So I decided to bring “her” over for a nice casual dinner and drinks on a Friday night.
Chulo Restaurant & Bar is a multi-concept space. There are proper dining tables, nice sofas for lounging and high tables on the balcony. Good thing we arrived early so we could pick a nice table. The crowd started coming in around 8.00pm and as the night progressed all the tables and sofas were taken up.
Some Asahi Super Dry and white wine to start the night
They have a couple of choices of red and white wines. It’s not a wine bar after all but most likely you’ll be able to find something you like.
Cream of Broccoli soup – RM12.80 – I found this one quite nice. Not too rich and heavy as it had just a touch of cream and it’s not a soup that is very common like mushroom or onion soup. There are garlic croutons inside to add to the texture and taste. A good start!
Australian Wine Infused Mussels – RM17.80 – We liked this one a lot. The sauce was finely balances, not too creamy or sour and it was gently infused with garlic and herbs. I hate places which stinge on their garlic butter for their garlic toast and I’m happy to report that Chulo is definitely not one of them. BTW don’t share this dish between more than two people because you won’t be able to get enough of this.
Taking pics of well presented food has become somewhat a habit for us and I’m sure for a lot of people as well. Wonder what psychologists have to say about this phenomenon…ha ha ha!
Butter Fish Fillet – RM34.80 – this dish came with butter fish, prawns, calamari, and mussels in a delicious tomato fondue sauce made with not one, not two but THREE cheeses and nicely balanced with some acidity. We didn’t leave any sauce on the plate at the end of the meal. This dish comes with a choice of side salad or mashed potatoes. We choose the salad which was lightly dressed (fortunately otherwise I would have had to eat the whole thing as she absolutely hates salads drenched in dressing). This dish is definitely a must-try at Chulo!
Rack of Lamb – RM45.80 – deliciously marinated and roasted New Zealand lamb served with steamed vegetables, caramalised onions, roasted potatoes and slow cooked tomatoes and rosemary jus. Wow! The balance of flavours in this dish was totally awesome! The tender lamb was so well complemented by the caramalised onions and rosemary sauce while the tomatoes added some acidity. A must have for meat lovers!
After the mains we were too full to have desserts so we decided to have some drinks. This was the B52 – RM20.00 each – kahlua, Baileys and triple sec. Down the hatch it went! A good little perk me up!
Next up was the “Liquid Cocaine” – RM20.00 each. Totally don’t know what’s in it but that’s sugar on the top. Tasted ok though but then again you don’t sip and savour shooters, you open your mouth and down they go!
Grasshopper – traditionally made with green Crème de menthe, white Crème de cacao and fresh cream. It’s minty taste made it very refreshing!
They have five (5) different single malt whiskies at Chulo and I opted for a glass of Singleton.
This is the first time where “she” approved of every dish. And because she’s quite a picky eater that certainly says quite a bit about the food at Chulo Restaurant & Bar.
Will definitely head back for more the next time I’m over at Jaya One.
