Wow! I really respect those who helped their friends in the middle of the night! If you have those make sure you appreciate them and never let them go!
Now on to the Chulo food review.
Not many of you might notice that there is actually a restaurant a bar called Chulo tucked away above Brussels in Jaya One, Petaling Jaya. Under a new management, this bar has evolved into a restaurant and bar concept which offers a whole array of drinks from wines to beers and spirits but at the same time some really decent food!
So I headed over with 5 Malaysia’s Hottest Bloggers members on a Tuesday night which also happened to be Chulo’s wine buffet night!
We purposely chose to go on a Tuesday as it was wine buffet night! All the wine you can drink for just RM55.00++. Wine lovers rejoice!
The menu for our dinner

Sexy Felixia Yeap was there for dinner with us (pictured here with Sarah)
The interior and the bar
If you are partaking in the wine buffet there is a selection of 3 whites and 3 reds from different regions around the world to choose from.
There are 2 types of sangria! One with more and different fruits. Ask your waiter for the options.
Crème of Broccoli Soup – broccoli cooked with veggie stock and white cream served garlic croton, sour cheese on top. I’m not really a broccoli fan but I thought this was ok. The girls seemed to like it though.
Mushroom Cappuccino Soup – garden picket wild mushroom cooked with veggie stock and served with Grissini. I like this and so did the girls. Not overly creamy and you can taste the mushrooms.
Chulo Wings – These wings are grilled NOT fried and delectably tossed in chili lime and garlic. Now I liked these a lot! Definitely not your typical greasy deep fried chicken wings! The extra chilli sauce on the side can pack a punch which is great as I love spicy food!
Mushroom Rissotto – Arborio rice braised with the mushroom puree, assorted mushroom on top with parmesan cheese. I’m a big fan of rissottos and this one was made pretty well! The herby mushroom flavour was balanced out with the creaminess of the cheese and I didn’t let a single grain go to waste.
Classic Ceaser Salad – Cos lettuce, hard boiled egg, crispy croton mixed the Caesar dressing sauce with grill chicken breast. I’m not much of a vege fan so the girls ate most of this one haha! One good thing is that it was not drenched in oily and fattening dressing.
Nicoise Salad – Roasted Mixed vegetable, vinaigrette dressing served with soft poached egg hollandaise sauce on top. Had trouble pronouncing the name of this dish. I liked the bell peppers though as they lent some acidity to the dish! Once again the salad was not drenched in dressing!
Rack of Lamb
A succulent cut of New Zealand Air Flown rack of Lamb crusted with herb crumb, confit potatoes fondue and carrot, caramelized onion served with thyme red wine jus. A lot of meats are overcooked in Malaysia but the chef got this one spot on! Nice and pink and tender inside while the outside was crusty and flavourful!
Herb Crusted Fish Fillet
Butter Fish crusted with fine herbs, cooked to perfection, on a bed of lemon, mashed potatoes and drizzled with citrus vinegrette. Now this one is good! Also probably because I love butter fish but I think they did a great job with this dish. My only grouse is that it could be a little bigger.
Golden brown chicken roulade
Pan fried chicken breast with basil pesto, sundried tomatoes, steam vegetables and creamy mash potatoes with thyme jus. The chicken was pretty tender and flavourful but I really liked the smooth mashed potatoes!
Spaghetti aglio e olio with grilled salmon
Chili flakes, garlic, extra virgin olive oil served with spicy tomato relish – order this only if you can take spicy food. I can so no guesses as to who cleaned up this plate. The salmon was fresh and the skin crispy!
Spaghetti Carbonara – see the egg yolk on the side? Quickly pour it in when your dish arrives so the heat from the dish will cook the egg. Not bad but with all carbonaras I suggest you share this with someone.
Panna cotta with fresh strawberry sauce – sweet, sour and creamy! Quite a good fusion of those three flavours. Pretty smooth too! I think this should be their signature dessert!
Bread and Butter Pudding served with Vanilla Ice Cream – for those who like something a bit sweet to end the meal.
Chulo is a Carlsberg outlet meaning there is Carlsberg (duh!), Asahi Super Dry draught (my fav!), Kronenbourg 1664, and Somersby cider available.
A pic with the owners of Chulo Restaurant & Bar
And a final photo for the night with hot baby Jeslyn who is one of the owners!
You may have noticed that there are no prices for the food listed above. This is because Chulo is revamping their old menu and the new menu should be out when you are reading this post. The pricing? Pretty average for the food above. Won’t burst your piggy bank and sure beats having lousy bar food (or worse still – hot, sweaty and smelly dining at the lok lok van at side of the road) for dinner when you’re having your happy hours so the next time you’re at Jaya One in the evening do give Chulo a try (make sure you order the chicken wings!)
