UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd recently launched the all-new Toyota Yaris Cross in Malaysia, introducing the company’s first non-national B-segment five-seater crossover SUV in both petrol and hybrid variants, as demand for compact SUVs in the country continues to grow.
The Yaris Cross is priced at RM99,900 for the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) variant and RM109,900 for the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) variant. Both are locally assembled at UMWT’s manufacturing facility in Bukit Raja, Selangor — a detail that carries implications for pricing, supply continuity and UMWT’s broader investment in local production capability.
“The B-SUV segment continues to gain momentum as more Malaysians look for vehicles that can support their daily needs with greater flexibility and confidence. With the Yaris Cross, we are expanding our hybrid offering with a solution that is practical and reliable, backed by the trust and dependability that Toyota delivers. Our approach has always been to introduce technologies that are relevant to how Malaysians drive today, and hybrid continues to offer a clear and accessible pathway towards electrification. The Yaris Cross brings this together in a way that is easy to adopt, while delivering the efficiency and usability that support everyday driving with confidence, giving customers the freedom to choose what works best for them, Your Path, Your Way.”
Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor
The Yaris Cross adds a B-segment crossover to Toyota’s growing electrified lineup in Malaysia, which already includes the locally assembled Corolla Cross HEV and Vios HEV, alongside imported fully built-up HEV variants of the Vellfire, Harrier, Camry and Innova Zenix. The launch reflects Toyota’s Multi-Pathway approach — offering customers a choice between conventional and hybrid powertrains rather than mandating a single technology direction.

Externally, the Yaris Cross adopts a trapezoid front silhouette with dual grilles, 18-inch machined alloy wheels and full LED lighting. Five colour options are available, including the Spicy Scarlet and Dark Turquoise special edition shades alongside Platinum Pearl White, Silver Metallic and Attitude Black.
The cabin features a Blue-Black colour theme with blue accent stitching — a colour Toyota traditionally reserves for electrified models. The driver’s seat is eight-way power-adjustable on the HEV variant, and the cockpit is anchored by a 7-inch TFT digital metre display offering four customisable information layouts. A 10.1-inch infotainment screen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a wireless charging pad, rear USB-C ports and a power back door with kick sensor are standard.
Cargo capacity is rated at 471 litres, supplemented by 200mm of underfloor storage and sufficient floor length — with rear seats folded — to accommodate a bicycle or stroller. Ground clearance is 210mm, with a wading depth of up to 600mm, a practical consideration for Malaysian road conditions. A minimum turning radius of 5.2 metres supports urban manoeuvrability.
The HEV variant uses Toyota’s fourth-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive, pairing a 1.5-litre 2NR-VEX engine with an electric motor for a combined system output of 111 PS. Factory-tested fuel economy is rated between 27.8 and 33.3 km per litre. The battery is self-charging through regenerative braking during deceleration, meaning no external charging infrastructure is required. The locally assembled lithium-ion battery — 48 cells, 763.7 Wh — carries a separate eight-year unlimited-mileage warranty, extendable to 10 years, with coverage that includes the inverter and Power Management Control ECU. The ICE variant is powered by a 1.5-litre 2NR-VE engine with CVT, producing 106 PS and 138 Nm.
The Yaris Cross is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense across all variants — a nine-system suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems including Pre-Collision System with Pre-Collision Braking, Full Speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Prevention, Lane Keeping Control, Pedal Misoperation Control and Automatic High Beam. A Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Panoramic View Monitor and Clearance Sonar provide additional situational awareness. Six SRS airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchor points are standard across the range.
Both variants carry a five-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty. The Yaris Cross is available for booking at authorised Toyota dealerships nationwide, supported by UMWT’s network of more than 100 service centres across Malaysia. Further details are available at www.toyota.com.my
For Malaysian buyers, the RM10,000 price gap between the ICE and HEV variants is narrower than it may initially appear. Rated at up to 33.3 km per litre under factory test conditions, the hybrid system’s fuel economy advantage translates to measurable savings over a typical ownership period — particularly for urban drivers covering moderate daily distances. Equally significant is the self-charging nature of Toyota’s hybrid system: with no external charging required, the Yaris Cross HEV is accessible to buyers without home charging infrastructure, effectively removing the most common practical barrier to hybrid adoption in Malaysia’s still-developing EV ecosystem.
The warranty package is a further differentiator worth examining. An eight-year, unlimited-mileage warranty on the hybrid battery — with coverage extending to the inverter and Power Management Control ECU, and optionally extendable to a transferable 10-year term — directly addresses the concern most often cited by hesitant hybrid buyers: the long-term cost of battery ownership. Combined with UMWT’s 100-plus service centre footprint and locally assembled production, the Yaris Cross is structured not just to convert first-time buyers but to retain them through a full ownership cycle — a goal that becomes increasingly important as the B-SUV segment continues to attract more competitive entries.
