We got a chance to try the “Valentine’s Cupid” 6-course Valentine’s Day menu at Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill which is priced at RM595 nett per couple, and comes with complimentary two (2) glasses of Veuve Clicquot + a rose for the lady. This set menu is only available from 14 to 17 February 2019.

BEAUTIFUL DISTRACTION – Gratinated Oyster
with Spinach & Parmesan Cheese
Oysters are loaded with zinc which increases testosterone, making it the ideal food for love and intimacy, hence they often appear on Valentine’s Day menus! They also go great with champagne!
This one was smothered with cheese atop a bed of spinach. Eat it in one bite and close your eyes as you savour the tantalising mix of flavours and umami goodness in your mouth before you wash it all down with some champagne.
For someone like me who loves oysters, I really wished that there were more. But fret not as there are many more courses to follow and you’ll need to leave some space for them.
COURTSHIP – Butter Poached Spot Prawns
Another dish that goes great with the Veuve Cliquot (or order a glass of house white wine to go along with this) is the butterflied butter poached spot prawns which were very fresh and juicy! We also liked the presentation of this dish which looks better if you take it from top down aka flat lay. The very surprising ingredient on this plate was salted popcorn which really provided a nice bit of contrast in taste and texture!
FIRST KISS – French Onion Soup
with melted Gruyere, seed bread crostini
A “deconstructed” onion soup with the Gruyere cheese actually inside the heart-shaped seed bread crostinis rather than topping the soup (which can be rather too filling/ cloyingly rich). It was very flavourful and the sweetness of the onions shone through! It was our first time having French Onion Soup like this but hey – my partner and I both liked it!
LEAF US ALONE – Caprese Salad
with homemade pesto, mozzarella, Roma tomatoes drizzled with extra virgin olive oil
This was a well-balanced little salad, with creaminess from the cheese, piquancy from the tomatoes and balsamic vinegar, and herbs from the pesto, with hints of richness from the extra virgin olive oil. Simple, and well-executed!
RAPTURE (Main Course – choice of)
Pan Seared Cod Fish
with roasted onion cream, artichokes, squid-ink pasta
She had this one but I tried a bit. The cod was perfectly cooked and was complemented by the roasted onion cream, while the squid-ink pasta lent even more umami flavours to this dish! Goes to show that a good dish doesn’t have to involve too many ingredients!
OR
Herb Crusted Rack of Lamb
with grilled asparagus, charred cherry tomatoes, pommes paillasson, pan jus
Order this medium rare and you’ll be rewarded with a lovely pink, juicy and tender rack of lamb that is oh so flavourful due to the herb crust that it really doesn’t even need the pan jus.
SWEET SURRENDER – Dessert for 2
chocolate macadamia cake
A very Insta-friendly dessert with lovely bright popping colours especially the pink cotton candy!

You can also add on some wine to accompany your dinner. The house wine selections are pretty decent!

All photos shot with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. While the Mate 10 Pro’s camera can be set to full manual mode, I feel that it’s more important to spend quality time actually TALKING to your partner rather than fiddling with the settings to shoot the perfect photo.
To be honest, the camera’s AI is intelligent enough to detect the scene and adjust the camera’s settings to best suit it hence saving you a lot of trouble and time. If you’re so obsessed with having that perfect photo, you can always post-process it.
As far as I’m concerned, when you’re out with your loved one, family, friends, or colleagues or basically anyone, do give them the courtesy and respect by putting away your phone (unless you want to snap some quick photos to immortalise the occasion).
