Birthday Dinner at Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill

Gobo Upstairs Lounge & Grill in Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur is one of my go to places for a semi-fine dining meal that doesn’t burn a terribly big hole in my wallet. To celebrate my birthday this year, the nice folks at Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur invited me over to try their special 5-course New Year’s Eve menu which is priced at RM346 nett per person.

 

Many thanks to Edrington Malaysia for the lovely bottle of Glenrothes single malt whisky which I brought along for dinner. (Kindly note that the restaurant’s corkage charges will apply if you’re bringing your own alcohol.)

Appetizer

Marinated Lobster

Berries, Apple Fennel Salad, Pickled Onion & Salsa Verde

Oh my! This was my favourite dish of the night! Will you look at that claw? There’s more lobster meat hidden underneath it as well! The sweet and piquant berry compote and salsa perfectly complement and balanced out the flavours of the lobster.

 

So good that it deserves another photo!

Soup

Chicken Consume with Chicken Dumpling and Scallion Oil

For the soup course, Chef Mun opted for something more light after the richness of the previous dish. Although it was light in texture, it was definitely not light in flavour and the broth was immensely flavourful indeed. In fact, this was quite a nutritious dish! The chicken wantans/ dumplings were nice and tender, adding some texture to this dish.

 

Entree

Pan Seared Foie Gras

Poached Pear in Red Wine, Arugula and Mustard

Oh my! My favourite ingredient of all time – foie gras! This was my second favourite dish of the night (after the lobster). A beautifully seared piece of foie gras matched with sweet poached pear with hints of spice from the red wine, a slight bite of mustard and the bitterness of the arugula to round of this wonderful little entree!

  

Main Course

Grilled 150 days Grain-Fed Tenderloin

Onion relish, truffle pomme puree, baby carrot, Asparagus, broccolini and Madeira Sauce

Of course, this was my choice of main as I will always opt for red meat if possible. Really couldn’t stop eating the truffle pomme puree! Now always ALWAYS order your steak at most cooked medium rare to fully enjoy it! Anything above and the cow would have died for nothing. I must say that the beef went really well with the Madiera sauce and being someone who really appreciates a good sauce (much to the chagrin of my usual partner in crime who says that it adds calories and masks the true flavours of the food), I really wished there was more!

Pan Seared Cod fish

prawn mousse, summer roasted vegetables and seafood broth

She had this but I managed to steal a few bites. The cod was cooked to perfection (as usual in Gobo Upstairs) however the really intriguing item in this dish was the prawn mousse which was really flavourful, adding an extra seafood element to this creation!

  

Dessert

Ricotta Cheese Cake

served with mix berries compote

A rich, sweet and piquant end to a really lovely meal.

  

As it was my birthday, the awesome folks at Traders Hotel arranged a special dessert for us, complete with some bubbly to celebrate the occasion!
