Romantic Dining Spots

Valentine’s Day Menu Review (2016) at Prego at The Westin Kuala Lumpur

[Valentine’s Day Special Review]

Conne Lim Jen Yng

This year, The Westin Kuala Lumpur will be having a luxurious 5-course intimate dinner at Prego which is the hotel’s Italian restaurant. The Executive Chef has prepared some delicate Italian specialties for the romantic occasion – from an elaborate antipasto to a shared hearty main course and a luscious sweet ending.

For this special occasion, I ordered some roses in advance and collected them before I headed over to The Westin Kuala Lumpur for the dinner. Now who says I’m not the romantic type? Well a lovely bouquet of roses always works to get your partner in the right mood no matter how bad a day they had.

Anyway on to the dinner.

Some wine to start off the night. Wine is not part of the set dinner so you'll have to oder this separately. Ask the sommelier to recommend a good choice to go along with the food.

Antipasto – Appetizer
Zuppa di Pomodorini di Pachino Arrosto con Gambero Rosso di Mazzara del Vallo e Olio al Basilico
Sicilian Roasted Cherry Tomatoes Soup with
Crispy ‘Mazzara del Vallo’ Red Prawn and Basil Emulsion

Think this has got to be the best tomato soup that I’ve ever eaten! The Executive Chef shared that he got specially imported cherry tomatoes from Sicily for this. No wonder it tasted so good. The prawn was beautifully cooked and really crispy on the outside. In fact, so crispy that I just ate the skin along with the juicy meat inside. The soup also acted as a lovely “sauce” for the prawn.

La Pasta
Ravioli al Nero di Seppia con Dentice e Burrata, Salsa Aurora, Porro Croccante e Caviale
Home Made Squid Ink Ravioli stuffed with Australian Red Snapper and
Italian Burrata Cheese, Aurora Sauce, Dehydrated Leek and Caviar

Oh my! A pasta topped with caviar? Marvellous! I could really taste the burrata cheese when biting into the ravioli which is great for a cheese lover like myself. Lovely creamy raviolis balanced out with the savouriness of the caviar with some piquancy coming from the cream-based tomato “aurora” sauce. This portion is meant to be shared and trust me – if you finished this on your own you’d be too full for the mains.

Secondo – Main Course
Aragosta Gratinata con Salsa ai Funghi Porcini
Boston Lobster Gratin with Fresh Italian Herbs, Porcini Mushrooms Sauce

AND

Guancia di Manzo Brasata
Slow-Cooked Beef Cheek

SERVED WITH
Carciofi Saltati, Purea di Patate al Tartufo, Verza Rossa, Perle di Pera Glassate
Sautee Artichokes, Truffle Scented Red Desire Potato Mash, Braised Red Cabbage, Glazed Pear Pearls

Lobster! Lovely lobster smothered in cheese! Don’t forget to break apart the pincer as there’s also lovely meat inside it (and don’t worry, the chef has already cracked the pincer for you). My partner in crime commented how fresh the lobster was and the Executive Chef later mentioned that he got the lobster just that morning. I also loved the slow-cooked beef cheek which was so tender it fell apart in the mouth without much chewing. Also worth mentioning is the velvety smooth truffle mashed potatoes! This dish, like the pasta before, is meant for sharing which is totally fine with me because my partner and I normally share most of our dishes anyway (but I gave her most of the lobster anyway and guys, be a gentleman and give the best parts of a sharing dish to your partner ok!).

Dolce – Dessert
Semifreddo al Cioccolato Bianco, Gelatina al Profumo di Magnolia
e Confettura di Ciliegia della Cina
Semi Frozen White Chocolate Cream, Osmanthus Jelly & Lychee Compote

A pretty little not too sweet but rather creamy dessert to end the meal. I liked how the restaurant decided to make this a fusion dessert with Eastern and Western ingredients.
