Over the last few years there have been some noticeable trends in the food and beverage industry. Starting off with Chatime which made Taiwanese bubble tea popular again (bubble tea was available since I was in secondary school) then came the coffee/ cafe trend which evolved somewhat into the breakfast cafe trend and now we are witnessing the waffle trend!
Waffles are certainly not new in Malaysia. You can find them at A&W and at those little dessert kiosks in shopping malls or LRT stations. Honestly I really didn’t expect waffles to suddenly gain such popularity again but hey – it’s nice to be surprised every now and then. So I got to try out a new waffle place when one fine morning Nicole invited me to join her and Amaine at Chequers in Taman Tun Dr. Ismail for breakfast.
The shop is divided into indoor and an al fresco dining areas. There’s no upstairs at section at the moment although you will notice a staircase.
Nicole ordered this one and boy was it good! The special house hollandaise sauce was unlike any I’ve ever tasted as it was mildly spicy and actually imparted some taste to the eggs as compared to the normal hollandaise sauce which is pretty much just creamy (my usual partner in crime usually stops me eating too much of it as she says it contains a whole lot of cream). Wished they would sell the sauce by the jar, I’d certainly buy some to bring home with me. This dish is actually very worth the price. Nicole doesn’t eat beef therefore they substituted it with turkey ham which went along pretty well with the rest of the dish too. The creamy avocado was nice while the eggs were perfectly cooked. I will order this one next time!
I must really find out where I can buy the tatter tots! Now this was a nice and filling breakfast. The sausage was pretty good too and was definitely one of the commercial sausages you get from the supermarket. I did think that a nice sauce would go great with this…perhaps the awesome hollandaise sauce? He he! (wishful thinking)
Served with ice cream and a strawberry, Chequers informs me that this one is their most popular dessert and I can certainly see why. It’s really delicious – the combination of flavours and textures that makes you just want to keep eating and eating. A must-try if you go to Chequers!
I love the food and I’ll definitely be going back there again (perhaps with my partner in crime who I hope won’t stop me from finishing the awesome hollandaise sauce) to try out the other waffles, the lunch items, as well as the pastas. Great addition to the growing F&B hub that is TTDI!
Parking can be somewhat an issue on weekends close to lunchtime but it was pretty easy at 10.30am therefore I highly suggest going early or going during off-peak hours.
