[Watch & Timepiece]
Glycine timepieces celebrated its 100th anniversary on 30 October 2014 at Ploy in Kuala Lumpur. Glycine was founded by Eugene Meylan, and has been producing watches at its factory in Bienne, Switzerland since 1914. Meylan was a perfectionist watch engineer with good business acumen allowing him to understand the market demands, and the possibilities offered by the technological advances of the time. He succeeded in producing extremely precise, small movements for ladies watches, enabling Glycine to put on the market fine miniature movements, which were encased in gold and platinum cases, and often studded with diamonds.
In 1931, Meylan showcased his own invention – a well-functioning self-winding watch, which sadly due to lack of capital, could not be exploited commercially however some of these rare GLYCINE Eugène Meylan SA self-winding watches can still be found in the collectors’ market.
Meylan launched his chronometer range in 1934, a line of watches which passed the tests of the Official Swiss Quality Control. The economic depression years of the 30’s and World War 2 exacted a heavy toll on the company as Switzerland was cut off from nearly all its traditional export markets.
Glycine managed to survive the harrowing period and even managed to be one of only 29 exhibitors at the Basel Fair in 1938, an annual event the firm has not missed since. After the war, Glycine managed to increase their production and presented to the public a complete range of automatic (self-winding) watches, making use of the most advanced technologies of the time and the rest they say, is history!
John Clare, Head of Country Management of DKSH welcomed us guests at the cocktail before introducing Stephan Lack, President of Glycine Watch SA to share about the evolution of the brand since 1914 as well as the brand’s plans in Malaysia and Asia. After the speeches, John Clare and Stephan Lack together with Juliana Tan, Assistant General Manager of DKSH Luxury & Lifestyle (SEA) cut the cake which was specially prepared for the centenary celebrations.
Malaysian songstress Janet Lee and her 3-piece band then took to the stage to entertain the guests while we got to see the timepieces up close.
