[Food Review]
It’s been a while since my partner in crime and I visited Villa Danieli and we do have fond memories of our previous two (2) outings there as we love the romantic ambience which is great as a dining spot for couples. So it was with much excitement and anticipation that we braved the jam and headed over to Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur for the special preview of the Allegrini wine pairing dinner menu at Villa Danieli.
The Allegrini family has been influential in the history of Fumane and of Valpolicella since the 16th century and has passed on the culture of wine-making from generation to generation. The region of Valpolicella, which is renowned as one of the most prestigious wine-making regions in Italy, has been dedicated to wine-making since ancient times, as its name: “val polis cellae” means, “the valley of many cellars”. It is located in the eastern part of Veneto, between Verona and Lake Garda, with its boundary demarcated to the north by the Lessini mountains. Today Allergini wines are exported throughout the world and is available in Villa Danieli in Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur.
The Allegrini wine pairing dinner which was specially designed by Chef Kamaruddin Adnin, the Executive Sous Chef of Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel. Chef Kamaruddin or “Bob” as he prefers to be called, has 16 years of culinary experience from the best hotels in Kuala Lumpur to cruise ships Royal Viking Sun and Seabourn Sun Ship, and even the Danat Resort Jebel Dhanna in Abu Dhabi.

Cicchetti – Polenta crostini with caramelize wild mushroom
A nice little amuse bouche to awaken the palate for the dishes to come!

Appetizer – Due Venetian di mare
Fried Oyster with orange drizzle, onion, raisin, pine nut and salsa verde
Ceviche cured prawn, cherry tomato on vine, lemon oil
Paired with the Vermentino DOC, Solosole 2013
This was a bounty of different flavours on a single dish – savoury, sweet, nutty, sour, all enhanced by the Vermentino DOC which was a bit on the dry side yet very refreshing.

Pasta – Green pea risotto
Green pea Risotto lake, crispy beef stripe and parmesan cracker
I hate green peas but surprisingly I really liked this risotto which came with a delicious parmesan cracker which I couldn’t get enough of and a salty beef stripe to add to the taste.
Paired with the Palazzo Della Torre IGT, Allegrini 2010 which is ruby red in colour, and has aromas of cherry with rich dark chocolate notes. On the palate it feels velvety and smooth, and is a well-balanced and offers ripe, juicy dark fruit, with silky tannins and a hint of acidity.
Before the main course arrived, we were served the La Grola IGT, Allegrini 2010. It is a full bodied, intense and elegant wine which is dark ruby red in colour, and has a bouquet with notes of wild berries, juniper, tobacco and coffee essence.
Main course (selection of either the fish or beef)

Stew grouper fish – Stew grouper fish in cream with grilled asparagus, fennel and mashed sweet purple potato
(I ordered the beef so I didn’t get to try the fish.)

Grilled beef rib – Grilled glazed beef rib with sage butter spinach gnocchi, endive and natural glazing jus
Both mains are paired with the Amarone Valpolicella Classico DOC, Allegrini 2008
I can never say no to beef. The beef was very tender and flavourful and its flavour was enhanced by the red wine. I was too full to eat the gnocchi but I did wipe up most of the jus with the beef. I know more and more people are starting to say that you shouldn’t be too fussy about pairing red wine with red meat and white wine with white meat, however I try to stick to that as I feel that red wine brings out the metallic flavour in fish and seafood (reacting to some properties inside perhaps?) which is rather unpleasant. A nice steak with a nice full bodied wine is pretty much heaven to me…

Dessert – Mascarpone cheese mousse mille foglie
Layered sweet mascarpone cheese mousse with chocolate salami, berries compote and sable crumble
Paired with the Giovanni Recioto Classico 2010
I’m not really much of a dessert person but this dessert was a nice mix of rich flavours contrasting against the berries while the chocolate added a depth of flavour. The wine was sweet and paired well with this dessert, lending its sweetness to complement the dish.
This special four-course set meal is priced at RM220++ per person, and is only available at Villa Danieli for dinner from 7 to 30 November 2014. Add an additional RM150++ per person to enjoy your meal with the pairing of Allegrini wines. Alternatively, you could also order the wines by glass or bottle and the prices are listed below.
