Hong Leong Bank has formally unveiled HLB opus, an invitation-only credit card issued to a select group of clients that the bank says is Southeast Asia’s first credit card made from ceramic and Malaysia’s first card built on Visa’s Infinite Privilege tier.

The card is made using Convego Ceramic, a material developed by card-technology supplier Giesecke+Devrient (G+D), which is headquartered in Munich, Germany. According to the bank, the card is manufactured under high heat and pressure and then finished with diamond polishing, producing a scratch-resistant surface. HLB said the card has a distinct feel, a reflective finish and a particular sound when placed on a surface, characteristics it says distinguish it physically from standard metal or plastic cards.

HLB said the card is intended for clients it considers to have achieved a significant level of personal or business success, and that it is issued only by invitation rather than through open application.

The bank is positioning the card as part of what it calls a “One Bank” approach, tying together three of its divisions: Business & Corporate Banking, which serves entrepreneurs and companies; Private Banking, which manages wealth for high-net-worth clients; and Personal Financial Services, which oversees the card programme itself. HLB said the aim is to connect a client’s business and wealth relationship with the bank to the lifestyle benefits attached to the card.

“HLB opus celebrates our clients’ lives. Behind each client is an intimate chronicle of stories and legacies, business journeys, as well as personal sacrifices that shape who they are today. Every success is hard earned, born of ambition, tempered by grit, lifted by community, rooted in family, and anchored in identity. As an artefact forged in fire, HLB opus is a fitting tribute. Together with our partners, HLB opus honours that success with world-class global privileges, premier travel rewards and bespoke experiences.”

Andrew Jong, HLB’s managing director of Personal Financial Services

“In an increasingly digital world, the physical card remains the ultimate tangible expression of distinction. HLB took a thought-leading approach with HLB opus by designing a privilege-first proposition rather than a typical card program. The Bank approaches it as the physical gateway to an elite privilege ecosystem for their most valued clients. Using our Convego Ceramic technology, HLB opus is engineered as a masterpiece that sets a new industry benchmark for what a luxury payment experience can be.”

Farouk Musthafa, managing director at Giesecke+Devrient Singapore

HLB opus sits on Visa’s Infinite Privilege tier, a card category that Visa introduced across the Asia-Pacific region earlier this year, sitting above the long-standing Visa Infinite tier. Visa had already brought the tier to Sri Lanka’s Sampath Bank Private Banking before HLB’s July announcement, and Singapore-based UOB separately announced in July that it would roll out cards on the same tier, along with a further tier called Visa Infinite Private, across five ASEAN markets including Malaysia.

Cardholders will have access to what HLB describes as unlimited Plaza Premium Lounge access worldwide, along with access to Visa-affiliated private clubs, fast-track immigration services and status matching with three tiers: Harrods Gold, the ALL Accor+ Explorer Gold hotel tier and Voyager, a status tier within Banyan Tree hotels’ guest-recognition programme.

“Today’s affluent consumers are looking beyond traditional notions of luxury, placing greater value on experiences that feel personal, distinctive and reflective of what they have achieved. HLB opus brings this to life by combining the global privileges of Visa Infinite Privilege with Hong Leong Bank’s deep understanding of its most valued clients. We are proud to partner with HLB to introduce this exceptional proposition in Malaysia, recognising success through thoughtfully curated experiences, elevated service and seamless access wherever life takes them.”

Jason Phua, head of clients at Visa Malaysia

HLB opus also comes with an arrangement with Malaysia Airlines’ Enrich loyalty programme, building on an existing points-conversion partnership between the airline and the bank. Under the new arrangement, HLB opus clients receive 60,000 Enrich Points once they pay the card’s annual fee. Clients can also earn one Elite Point for every 10,000 ringgit spent overseas, according to HLB, which the bank said gives access to reward redemptions and travel benefits across the oneworld airline alliance — the network Malaysia Airlines belongs to.

“Today’s discerning travellers seek more than a premium destination; they value an elevated experience throughout their journey. Through our partnership with HLB Opus, we are pleased to offer greater value, choice and convenience to our customers. This collaboration extends the reach of our signature Malaysian Hospitality, with seamless reward redemptions and exclusive travel privileges across Malaysia Airlines and our global oneworld network, creating a more rewarding travel experience from journey to destination.”

Phillip See, chief executive of loyalty and travel services at Malaysia Aviation Group

HLB described the card as the latest step in a broader push into wealth management, alongside its private banking arm’s existing partnerships, which include one with Lombard Odier, a Swiss private bank. The bank said business and wealth banking are central to its current strategic plan, and that HLB opus is intended to link its corporate banking, private banking and personal banking businesses around a single group of clients.

The launch event was attended by senior figures from HLB, Visa, G+D and Malaysia Aviation Group, along with representatives from Plaza Premium Group and Percetakan Nasional Malaysia Berhad, according to the bank. Percetakan Nasional Malaysia Berhad, commonly known as PNMB, is Malaysia’s national printer and a licensed security printer for the Malaysian government.

For the clients who receive an invitation, the appeal of HLB opus lies less in any single feature than in how many everyday friction points of premium travel it aims to smooth out at once. Airport lounge access, private-club entry, faster immigration clearance and hotel status are typically things a well-travelled client would otherwise piece together individually, through separate hotel loyalty accounts, airline elite tiers or standalone club memberships. Bundling them into one card, tied to a single relationship with the bank, is meant to reduce that administrative overhead — the value is as much about convenience and consistency across trips as it is about any one perk in isolation.

The Malaysia Airlines Enrich arrangement is likely to matter most to clients who already fly the airline regularly. Because it builds on an existing points-conversion relationship rather than introducing a new one, cardholders already familiar with Enrich should find the transition straightforward, while the 60,000-point welcome allocation and the overseas-spend Elite Point rate give a concrete, near-term reason to activate the card rather than simply hold it. For clients whose travel leans more towards other airlines or alliances, the oneworld-wide redemption access broadens where those points can be put to use beyond Malaysia Airlines’ own network.
