Nestled within the Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel, Miyabi Japanese Restaurant has been quietly serving authentic cuisine for several years, yet remains a hidden gem to many local residents. The restaurant, whose name means “elegance” in Japanese, offers a refined dining experience that combines traditional techniques with fresh, high-quality ingredients.
Despite its established presence, Miyabi has maintained a low profile, known mostly to the Japanese community, making it a delightful discovery for locals seeking authentic Japanese cuisine in the area.
At the helm of Miyabi’s kitchen is Chef Tetsuya Yanagida, a culinary professional with over 20 years of experience. Chef Yanagida, known for his commitment to traditional Japanese cooking techniques, has worked in prestigious establishments across Japan and Kuala Lumpur. His approach to cuisine blends time-honoured methods with innovative practices, promising a unique dining experience for guests.
“At Miyabi, our focus is on traditional Japanese culinary techniques and the purity of flavors. We believe in letting the freshness of our ingredients shine through. Our style is simple and authentic, without relying on fancy gimmicks. The true essence of Japanese cuisine lies in its ability to highlight the natural taste of each component.”

The restaurant’s interior design incorporates wood elements to create a serene atmosphere, reminiscent of traditional Japanese aesthetics. The main dining area is suited for group gatherings, accommodating families and friends in a comfortable setting.
For those seeking a more interactive experience, a sushi counter that seats nine offers an intimate view of the chefs at work. Miyabi also caters to privacy needs with ten private rooms of various sizes, including four dedicated to Yakiniku-style dining, and one huge one that can easily fit 20 pax. These private spaces are ideal for both personal celebrations and business meetings, offering a versatile venue for various occasions.
Miyabi’s menu features a range of dining options, including Omakase, Yakiniku, and à la carte selections. A highlight of the offering is premium Japanese Wagyu beef, imported from Western Japan. The restaurant emphasizes the use of high-quality ingredients, subjecting the Wagyu to stringent monitoring processes to ensure it meets exacting standards.
The restaurant also places a strong emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, particularly fresh seafood from Penang. This commitment to using local produce not only ensures freshness but also supports regional farmers and fisheries.

Diners can expect a variety of traditional Japanese dishes, such as sushi, sashimi, and tempura, along with omakase sets. The restaurant also features live-cooking stations, allowing guests to observe chefs in action, adding an element of entertainment to the dining experience.
Duing our visit there, we got to try two notable set menus that showcase the restaurant’s culinary prowess. Both sets begin with an appetizer, followed by an exquisite sashimi platter featuring tuna, salmon, kanpachi, grouper, and isaki. The next course is a traditional dobinmushi, a delicate seafood broth with prawn and mushroom, served in a charming teapot. An agemono (fried dish) follows, leading to the main course, which differs between the two sets.
The Yu-ga seafood zen set offers a teppanyaki seafood medley of scallops, salmon, and prawns, while the Wagyu Hamburg steak set presents a succulent Wagyu beef patty. Both sets are accompanied by garlic fried rice, pickles, and miso soup. The meal concluded with a delightful green tea cheesecake for dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed both carefully curated sets which exemplify Miyabi’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and authentic Japanese dining experience, allowing the quality of each ingredient to shine through in every course.
Miyabi is located within the Sheraton Petaling Jaya Hotel along Jalan Utara C, Petaling Jaya. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Mondays to Saturdays (closed on Sundays).
