[Valentine’s Day Special]
Evonne and I recently headed over to the Element Kuala Lumpur hotel to try their “Be My Valentine” set dinner at TRACE restaurant & bar which will be available on 14 February 2019, from 6:30pm – 10.30pm, priced at RM388nett per couple (add on an additional RM100nett to secure a window seat).
The preview that we attended was held during lunchtime hence with the good lighting I just used my Huawei Mate 10 Pro to shoot the photos. However, on the night itself you can expect an evening in a candle-lit, romantic setting at TRACE restaurant & bar which overlooks the cityscape and Petronas Twin Towers.
We got a full preview the restaurant’s 5-course rustic French menu that will be specially prepared on Valentine’s Day, featuring classic creations given a modern twist and romantic presentation.

Pan-Seared Scallop with Caviar, Saffron Froth & Basil Oil
A classic that was beautifully executed with perfectly pan-seared scallops atop a fragrant saffron froth, amongst salmon roe and basil oil. The wild rocket on top added a nice earthiness to balance out the lovely umami flavours. One of the best amuse bouche that I’ve had (and I’ve dined in many premium restaurants) and this could actually double up as an appetiser on some menus.
Entrée – Salmon Confit
with Passion Fruit “Caviar”, Micro Greens & Truffle Oil Crabmeat Avocado Timbale with Salmon Roe & Candied Tomatoes
The salmon roe makes another appearance this time in the entrée. the balance of flavours of this dish was good – with the sweet candied tomatoes and passion fruit “caviar” balancing out the richness of the perfectly cooked salmon (I hate it when some restaurants overcook salmon!) and the avocado timbale, while the balsamic glaze added some piquancy to round out the dish.
Soup – Wild Mushroom Soup
with Garlic Brie Toast
A classic and hearty dish served in just the right portion. One of my all time favourite soups that was well-executed.
Lemon Myrtle Sorbet
A palate cleanser to freshen your tastebuds before the mains.
Black Angus Beef Tenderloin with Green Pepper Corn Sauce, Mashed Goma & Béarnaise Asparagus
Cooked to a very even and pink medium as it was sous vide-ed before it was finished on the grill. The result was a very tender and flavourful medallion that you could eat with the green peppercorn sauce (or if you’re a purist – enjoy the meat on its own!).
Rack of Lamb with Pommery Mustard Sauce, Potato Au Gratin, & Wild Mushroom Strudel
This was my favourite of all the three (3) proteins! A juicy and tender little lamb rack with a lovely pommery mustard sauce that provided a slight bite. I also enjoyed the potato au gratin.
Salmon Fillet with Saffron Sauce, Fish Roe, Pepper Relish, Potato Cake & Pearl Vegetables
The salmon, salmon roe and saffron sauce appear again – this time paired together which was delicious. I personally feel that sometimes you don’t need a dozen (or more) ingredients to make a fantastic dish. Just keep to the basics and ensure that it’s well-executed and let the natural flavours shine through!
Chocolate Indulgence & Cheese Cake
A sweet ending to a lovely meal – which I feel delivers good value for money.
