Luminox ICE-SAR Arctic 1000 Series

[Timepieces]

Luminox has a long history of working with heroes – and they are renowned for working with the United States Navy SEALs and now the brand has been appointed as an official partner of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR). The Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue (ICE-SAR) motto is: Devotion, Professionalism and Leadership, and was founded in 1928 due to Iceland’s extreme weather conditions and lack of a professional army. The first group of volunteers created this proud tradition and today, ICE-SAR has 93 teams and a force of over 8,000 volunteers, passionately driving accident prevention and Search and Rescue programs in Iceland to battle with Mother Nature.

Widely known as “The Land of Fire and Ice”, Iceland is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe and the world’s most active volcanoes. The barren island is located in the North Atlantic Ocean that is plagued for volatile arctic winds and freezing winters. The country’s constant exposure to the harsh forces of nature has meant that lives have been sacrificed at land and sea. Other extreme weather conditions include long summer days with near 24-hours of sunshine which are offset by short winter days with barely any hours of daylight. Avalanches, shipwrecks, storms, eruptions, earthquakes and subzero winters have forged a strong force of volunteers from a small Icelandic population of 330,000 that dedicate their time at any moment to help their fellow citizens and foreign visitors. All volunteers are Search and Rescue experts who receive an 18 months training before they can go on their first mission.

“Collaborating with ICE-SAR is a natural evolution and a perfect fit for Luminox – a brand already trusted and requested by so many professionals around the world. ICE-SAR rescuers are operating in extreme conditions and we are proud that they have chosen Luminox as their official partner”, said Bernd Stadlwieser, CEO of Luminox.

Luminox watches have proven their reliability on all sea, air, and land dimensions as the official watch licensee of the US Navy SEALs. Now with ICE-SAR, Luminox will be the dependable durable outdoor gear to overcome ice, heavy rains, strong winds as well as limited daylight visibility as Iceland remains in partial or total darkness during several months in winter. In such conditions, Luminox watches and their unique self-powered illumination system that provide constant glow for up to 25 years through the use of tritium gas tubes, will remain Always Visible and an Essential Gear to the ICE-SAR teams in order to conduct their missions.

“We are honoured to have an international and prestigious partner such as Luminox. Their watches are tough, light and a perfect fit for the Icelandic weather. At ICE-SAR, we are not heroes. We are ordinary people doing extraordinary work. Volunteers may join ICE-SAR for the action and the adrenaline, but first and foremost they must share the vision of helping others.” says Jón Svanberg, CEO of ICE-SAR.

During a search and rescue mission, time is of the essence as it is a matter of life and death. Freezing weather conditions means that modern day equipment cannot function as well due to battery drainage. Coupled with the need to carry heavy equipment, rescuers require a watch that is tough and provides a quick glance of the time in any light conditions. Luminox watches are designed and produced to go to these extreme places with the volunteers of ICE-SAR. Celebrating its 90th year this year, ICE-SAR has named Luminox as its Official Partner and to commemorate this partnership, Luminox has created a special ICE-SAR Arctic 1000 Series, which is made up of five models, with one being a limited edition.

All the ICE-SAR Arctic 1000 series use a 46mm Carbonox™ case. Exclusive to Luminox, Carbonox™ is an extremely tough and durable carbon-based material that is 6 times lighter than steel and 3 times lighter than titanium. It is also hypoallergenic, extremely durable and shock resistant. These timepieces feature scratch-resistant sapphire crystals, are powered by a Swiss Made quartz movement and are water-resistant to 200 meters. All watches are equipped with the Luminox Lighting Technology (LLT), which guarantees ultimate night vision to ICE-SAR teams for 24 hours a day, up to 25 years through their use of tritium gas tubes.

The logo of ICE-SAR, with its four circle-section elements has inspired the shape of the bezel for the collection while the hands are shaped to resemble the carabiners that the rescuers use on every mission. The hard-sandblasted dial calls to mind the lava fields that cover 30% of Iceland. On the blue and black/red models, the number 12 is replaced with ‘112’, the emergency number in many countries of Europe and USA. The ICE-SAR Arctic 1000 Series is made up of a four dial versions – a black dial, a black dial with red accents, a blue dial and a white dial. The straps used are genuine rubber with textile top insert and include a Carbonox™ signature buckle.

The limited edition timepiece is limited to 900 pieces worldwide. It uses the blue and red color scheme of ICE-SAR and all the watches are individually numbered on the caseback that also feature the ICE-SAR logo. At the nine o’clock, the index has been replaced with ‘90 years’ and the ICE-SAR logo is placed at six o’clock while ‘112’ replaces the number twelve.

The professional teams of the ICE-SAR are trained to go anywhere on Iceland and rescuers routinely answer calls during avalanches, shipwrecks, storms, eruptions, earthquakes, sub-zero winters and much more. These teams need a watch they can depend upon, that will endure the hardships they have to, and keep on doing its job. They need a watch they can see in the dead of a long winter’s night, and one that will not quit after the first shock or submersion in water. Luminox is proud to be working with the ICE-SAR, a historic Search and Rescue operation, and to be equipping them with ICE-SAR Arctic 1000 series watches.
