Janet and I recently headed over to Samplings On The Fourteenth Restaurant at Berjaya Times Square Hotel recently to try their (2018) Valentine’s Day menu. The restaurant is located at the East Tower on the 14th floor of Berjaya Times Square Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, and is an award-winning fine-dining restaurant under the stewardship of Chef Val’s, collecting 12 awards thus far; with the most recent being Best Fine-Dining Restaurant, World Gourmet Award (2017) and the prestigious Malaysia International Gourmet Festival, MIGF (2015).
This year, the restaurant has two (2) specially crafted menus for Valentine’s Day 2018:
Pre-Valentine’s Day Dinner
A 3-course set dinner specially prepared by the restaurant’s award-winning chefs on 13th February 2017 from 6.30pm till 10.30pm and priced at RM98 nett per person; for those who prefer to celebrate Valentine’s Day early.
Valentine’s Day Dinner on 14 February 2018
A 5-course set dinner specially prepared by the restaurant’s award-winning chefs on 14th February 2017 from 6.30pm till 10.30pm and priced at RM388 nett per couple inclusive of sparkling juice / wine.
We got to try the Valentine’s Day dinner which will be available on 14th February 2018, priced at RM388.00 per couple.
Love At First Sight
Horseradish Cream with Buffalo Mozzarella and Marinated Pickles
This appetiser was perfect for a salmon lover like myself! The perfectly cured salmon was matched with creamy mozzarella cheese, while the piquant pickles and spice from the horseradish cream added two more dimensions to this dish! Very Instagrammable and a great start to the meal!

Infused Lemongrass with Fish Maw
We had a consomme last year and this year even though the soup is cream based, I could tell that the cream was used with a lot of restraint and I was very happy to note that it wasn’t cloyingly rich. The fish maw (an ingredient normally found in traditional Chinese dishes) was somewhat of a surprise but somehow it worked! This is Chef Val’s typical style – bold and unafraid to try a fusion of Eastern and Western ingredients!

Wild Mushroom, Rocket Puree with Saffron Pink Peppercorn Sauce
Janet had this one (I had a small bite) and the very fresh fish was cooked absolutely perfectly! The combination of the accompaniments matched the fish nicely and added some nice variation in taste and texture – earthiness from the mushrooms, a tinge of bitterness from the rocket, and the lovely richness from the saffron sauce. This dish doesn’t really appear to be the most Instagrammable dish, but the combination of ingredients with Chef Val’s technical skills really made this what I would say is the dish of the night!

M7 Wagyu Beef Cheek
Sorghum Rice Spinach, Truffle Shallot Jus
The meat was melt in the mouth tender while still retaining the texture of beef. The truffle shallot jus added even more flavours to the beef and it was so good I soaked up every last drop with the rice!

With Macaroons, Raspberry Jelly
A sweet and creamy end to the very delicious meal. More often than not when I go for fine dining dinners, I find myself having to fight off the urge to take away some supper from McDonald’s or the Ramly Burger stall near my house however with the decent portions here, even a big eater like me was very satisfied and full by the end of this course!
Coffee or Tea
I must say that the Valentine’s Day menu at Samplings on the Fourteenth is incredibly good value for money! Also, as the restaurant is located away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping mall, it makes a very good venue ambience wise for a romantic evening with your partner.
