Cheese Wheel Pasta at 1940s Nicsmann by Lewre at The Starling Mall

The main dining area

1940s Nicsmann by Lewre has expanded with the addition of its latest outlet in The Starling in Uptown Damansara, offering Petaling Jaya folks a bistro and bar experience in a stylish atmosphere and most importantly at reasonable prices! The new outlet is already popular with diners as it was full house when I headed over with MHB’s Andy Kho and our friends on a Friday evening (good thing we had a table booked!).

The interior of the establishment is divided into two (2) sections namely the restaurant section which has low tables for dining, and the bar section which has high tables which are more suitable for drinks and chilling
There’s were also a couple of two piece bands which performed sets of some of the latest hits as well as popular classics from 5.00pm till late
There were quite a few tables of families enjoying their dinner when we were there. This is also a good place for birthdays as we witnesses quite a number of birthday celebrations there as well. The younger crowd tends to occupy the al fresco and bar areas which are more conducive for drinking!
For those diners who prefer some fresh air, the al fresco section is right beside The Starling’s park
The bar section has a full fledged bar as well as some electronic dart machines

The bar at Nicsmann is very well stocked and serves cocktails, draught and bottled beers, wines, champagne, liquor including single malt whiskies as well as non-alcoholic drinks like coffee, tea, sodas, mocktails and juices.

There’s a good happy hour rate here with pint s of Carlsberg or Connors draught going for just RM14.00 while pints of Asahi Super Dry and Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc draughts are priced at RM18.00 before 9.00pm. Five (5) and 10 pint promos as well as beer towers which are suitable for larger parties are also available.

There are also signature cocktails which the fairer sex would appreciate like Watermelon Love (the watermelon in the photo above), Sunshine (the pineapple in the photo above), Chocolate Martini and Lychee Margarita. In fact, the cocktail list is pretty extensive and there’s also absinthe and a wide variety of shooters to get you into the party mood!

Fresh Salmon Trout Carpaccio – RM26.00

Thinly sliced fresh salmon trout with salad greens and mushrooms topped with a balsamic reduction.

A nice and fresh appetiser with the addition of mushrooms to provide some earthy flavours to balance out the dish.

Teriyaki Fresh Salmon Trout – RM48.00

Seared on a hot pan and glazed with teriyaki sauce, served with mashed potatoes and garden vegetables.

Goes great with a pint of Asahi Super Dry!

Grilled Australian Lamb Shoulder – RM34.00

Grilled tender and flavourful cuts of lamb accompanied with a brown sauce and grilled vegetables.

Quite a generous portion for the price and definitely enough to satisfy a carnivore like me!

Seafood Platter – RM160.00

A combination of a dozen grilled green mussels with tomato coulis, cheese baked John Dory fish, stuffed calamari, and one dozen grilled prawn skewers.

This dish is perfect for sharing among three to four friends (or more if it’s ordered as a starter) as you get to try a little of everything! The stuffed calamari was the outstanding item on this platter as it was nicely grilled and went very well with the tomato coulis.

Now on to the star items of the night!

The signature dishes at Nicsmann has to be the pasta which is tossed in the large Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese wheel! Parmigiano-Reggiano or Parmesan cheese, is a hard, granular cheese named after the producing areas, which comprise the provinces of Parma, Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Modena, and Mantua, Italy. Under Italian law, only cheese produced in these provinces may be labelled “Parmigiano-Reggiano”, and it has been called the “King of Cheeses”.

The pasta is cooked then tossed in the pan containing the sauce before being finished in the cheese wheel which makes this a rich, cheesy pasta. There are three variants, namely Beef Bacon (RM35.90), Trio Mushroom (RM35.90) and Grilled Salmon (RM39.90). My advise is to share this dish with someone because although it’s really delicious, it can get cloyingly rich after a while so best if you paired it with a dish with other strong flavours like the stuffed calamari or lamb shoulder.

This special pasta is available from Mondays to Fridays from 6.00pm to 11.00pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12.00pm to 11.00pm.

Sizzling Brownie – RM24.00

Housemade chocolate brownie with chocolate and nuts. Served with vanilla ice cream and rich chocolate ganache

Oh talk about a decadent dessert! Pour the chocolate ganache over the ice cream/ brownie and watch it sizzle on the hot plate! Perfect for those who love chocolate (like me!). This one can also be arranged as a “birthday cake” if you inform the waiter in advance.
