Kassey and I headed over to Skullduggery in Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur on 20 September 2016, for the unveiling of The Glenlivet Cipher at a The Glenlivet Guardians’ event. The event venue was not disclosed thus we had to figure it out by solving the clue, then giving the correct answer to a question at the door to enter.

“The Glenlivet Cipher is a mystery. All your senses will be tested, as you decode its secret tasting notes. You may even have the makings of a master distiller,” said Alan Winchester, Master Distiller of The Glenlivet.

The Glenlivet Cipher was released with no cask information, tasting notes, nor age statement, and we were challenged to use all their senses to decode the flavour profile of this new single malt. Upon entering the venue, we were taken in groups through a sensory game, while blindfolded, to decipher certain aroma elements that were representative of The Glenlivet Cipher. Kassey guessed a few correctly while I got most wrong. The lucky winners of the game though got to bring home The Glenlivet whiskies.

“The Guardians of The Glenlivet will be the very first people to taste the Cipher in Malaysia,” said Brand Manager Benedict Yong of Pernod Ricard Malaysia.  “It is one of the privileges of being one of The Guardians.  We also made it a challenge right from the beginning as a tribute to this unique limited edition single malt.

“We ran with the theme of decoding a mystery; invitations were sent out to the event without the venue name.  Guests had to follow clues to arrive at the event venue and also crack a code that would allow them to enter,” he added.

The Glenlivet Cipher will retail for RM780 per bottle, inclusive 6% GST. As this is a limited edition whisky, the Cipher was first made available to The Glenlivet Guardians, before being released for retail purchase at selected outlets.

The official tasting notes will be revealed exclusively to The Glenlivet Guardians at a later date. The event was a pretty casual affair over canapes and The Glenlivet whiskies where we got to mingle with fellow members of the media and Glenlivet Guardians, discussing the flavours and preferences of single malt whiskies and altogether experiencing a deeper appreciation of the whisky’s complex flavour profiles.

If you’re keen to find out more about The Glenlivet Cipher, you can head over here – https://cipher.theglenlivet.com

There, a video with clues to help decode the whisky will be provided.  You will then have to select six aromas for the nose and six flavours for the palate, thus creating the flavour wheel out of over 10,000 possible combinations. On completion, a percentage score will reveal how close you have come to cracking The Glenlivet Cipher taste profile.
