[Food Review]

MHB’s Jamie and Jean, Jean’s friend, and Andy Kho recently joined me at Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant at Sunway Pyramid to try out the 2016 Oktoberfest Platter as well as some new dishes in the menu.
Oktoberfest was initially started as wedding celebration in 1810 to commemorate the union between Crown Prince Ludwig (who later became King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen at Theresienwiese (translated as Therese’s meadow / field) – it is for this reason that Oktoberfest is referred to by Germans as ‘die Wiesn’ or ‘the field’
Through the years, Oktoberfest celebrations have had a number of different elements and activities, including horse races, street parades (in traditional costumes), live music, dancing and of course the appreciation of authentic Munich-brewed beer. At the Oktoberfest celebration, each Oktoberfest beer operates a number of tents which provide different drinking experiences.
Today, Oktoberfest has evolved to become a global celebration with almost 7 million visitors consuming over 7 million litres of beer and more than half a million chickens throughout the celebration (based on 2011 figures), which lasts between 16 – 18 days from the middle of September to the first Sunday of October.
For 2016, the Oktoberfest festival in Munich, Germany will run from 17 September 2016 to 3 October 2016 – a total of 17 days of culture, cuisine and of course beers!
Brotzeit, being a German bar, will be having their beer barrel tapping ceremony on 17 September at Brotzeit in Mid Valley Megamall so do head over if you’d like to partake in the beer, food and activities!

Tomato sauce, mozzarella, thin slices of smoked pork loin, topped with olives and freshly grated horseradish. Quite an interesting pizza, especially the horseradish bits!

Traditional homemade meatloaf topped with a fried egg and bacon, and served with an Asian salad and fries. I really liked the meatloaf as it has loads of flavour and a nice firm texture, and of course anything with bacon get my two thumbs up!

Boiled ham, pork fillets, tomatoes and mozzarella on sourdough bread and served with coleslaw and fries. Topped with oozing melted cheese, this was quite a tasty dish although perhaps not enough to fill me up on its own.

Slices of cinnamon sugar dusted apple fritters served with homemade vanilla sauce. This dish is definitely a crowd-pleaser especially for the ladies!
Now on to the highlight of the review!

Brotzeit signature pork knuckle, pork garlic sausages, Gypsy belly bacon, lumberjack steaks, Nuremberger Pork and spicy chicken sausages served with sauerkraut and potato salad.
Oh my! What a feast indeed! Now this is a dish for a meat lover like me! This platter is enough for four (4) average eaters or five (5) small eaters and gives everyone a variety of meats accompanied with sauerkraut and potato salad. This platter goes incredibly well with a couple of pints of ice cold German beer!

Chef Helmut showing us how to quickly and easily debone the pork knuckle.
Some cocktails and beer to wash down the massive meal. Look out for an alcohol-less beer as well as the Oktoberfest brew coming to Brotzeit very soon.
