After a whole month of doing Chinese New Year menu reviews at some of the top Chinese restaurants, what better way than to cap it all off with review of a really opulent menu at Celestial Court at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur. In conjunction with the Year of the Monkey, Executive Chinese Chef, Vincent Loo and Dim Sum Chef, Ken Liew have created a specially-designed menus for diners.

Top of the list are the special yee sangs with the Longevity Peach with Boston Lobster Yee Sang, Legendary Yee Sang with Marinated Preserved Truffle Boston Lobster Meat in Ancient Plum Sauce, and Dragon King of Ocean Boston Lobster Yee Sang with Bananas and Chinese Pear. Of course, premium ingredients don’t come cheap therefore the three (3) Yee Sang choices are priced from RM 250 nett onwards.

Diners can also partake of four (4) exclusive prosperity 9-course set menus which tells the legendary story of the Monkey King, “Journey To The West, Eastern Sea Palace, Celestial Gatekeeper and Uproar in Heaven”. Among the notable dishes are Great Sage Yee Sang with Jelly Fish Flower, King Monkey Head and Bananas in Ancient Plum Sauce, Braised Eight Treasure Soup with Lobster Meat and Hasma, Signature Roasted Crispy Duck with Urban Herbs, Double Boiled Bird Nest with Red Dates, Pear, White Ginseng and Snowing Fungus and others more. The four (4) set menus start from RM1988 nett onwards per table of 10 persons.

If you prefer, you can also order from the a la carte Chinese New Year menu which features a range of authentic Chinese cuisine including the Chef favourites dishes such as the Double Boiled Cordyceps Flower Soup with Wild Duck and Fish Maw, Double Boiled Superior Par Si Bird Nest Consomme with Free Range Chicken and Cordyceps Flowers, Sauteed Fresh Scallop to the Sliced Cuttlefish with Flower Fungus and Green Vegetables in Spicy Beijing Sauce. The a la carte Chinese New Year dishes are priced from RM48 nett onwards.

Oh my! This was my first ever lobster yee sang! The sweet lobster meat was the crowning glory of this dish!

If you order a Boston Lobster yee sang, you will get a second course using the meat from the Boston Lobster’s head and claw

Braised superior bird’s nest broth with assorted seafood and spinach

A healthy soup that was a nice balance of sweet and savoury flavours. The bird’s nest and fish roe provided an extravagant touch to this delicate soup.

Braised 20 head green lips abalone with goose webs, sea cucumber in superior broth sauce

Goose web…not that’s something interesting for a change. I liked it’s chewy texture and I think if you like chicken feet you’ll like this as well. Another luxurious dish with the addition of abalone but of all the items in the dish I enjoyed the asparagus the most!

Sauteed fresh scallops with slice cuttlefish with flower fungus and green vegetable in spicy Beijing sauce

Awesome scallops! Everything else on the plate was a garnish to me.  The “spicy Beijing sauce” was not at all spicy to me, tasting more sweet actually but went well with the dish.

Duo combination of tiger king prawn, deep fried with spicy chili salt and sautéed with Sichuan style

The Sichuan style prawns were not too spicy and in fact I thought it was quite on the mild side (as compared to normal Sichuan dishes which can be fiery spicy). My favourite has to be the deep fried prawns though which were so nice and crispy with the chili salt imparting just enough flavour as not to overpower the sweet juiciness of the king prawn! Had to stop myself from eating too many of these!

Braised authentic E-fu noodle with seafood, dried oyster and bean sprout in abalone sauce

It was topped with loads of seafood including big prawns and my fav – SCALLOPS! If you’re not one for “lap mei fan”  you can consider having this dish which is really topped with a whole lot and I mean a WHOLE LOT of seafood!

Double boiled bird nest with red dates, pear, white ginseng and snow fungus

No super sweet dessert here. Only a super healthy soup that was nice and flavourful. Nice end to a truly opulent meal!
