[Chinese New Year Special]
Evonne and I recently headed over to try the special Chinese New Year menu at Five Sen5es, The Westin Kuala Lumpur’s authentic Cantonese restaurant. The special menu is only available from 2 to 21 February 2016, and consists of three (3) set menus, a selection of fresh Yee Sang, festive à la carte items and an enhanced dim sum brunch, offering a mix of traditional and modern signature creations.
Chinese Chef Tan with his team came up with this once a year offering especially for this auspicious event with celebratory dishes that engage your Sight, Taste, Scent, Touch and Sound.
Among the must-try dishes recommended by the restaurant are Chef Tan’s innovative Deep Fried Pork Spare Rib and Fresh Berries with Haw Berry Sauce, crispy yet juicy pork ribs are served with superfoods blueberries and raspberries, Slow Boiled Clay Pot Rice with Assorted Wax Meat and Chestnut representing contentment and happiness, Crisp-fried Prawn with Pumpkin and Salted Egg Yolk Mousse calling for prosperity and New Year Specialties Yee Sang with added Charcoal Grilled Dried Meat.

Norwegian Fresh Salmon Yee Sang and Abalone
This was the most awesome yee sang I’ve had to date with the addition of the abalone!
Double Boiled Pigeon With Chinese Ham and Baby Cabbage
Something healthy to get the meal started proper. The soup was very sweet and flavourful while the bits of Chinese ham and baby cabbage were a nice addition. A nice and heartwarming soup!
Poached Chicken With Spicy Garlic Sauce
The chicken was incredibly tender while the spicy garlic sauce added lots of flavour to the dish. I don’t normally like steamed/ chicken cooked in this manner but this one was extremely tender and flavourful!
Deep Fried Pork Spare Rib and Berries With Haw Berry Sauce
Oh yeah! A dish after my own heart! Deliciously crispy pieces of spare ribs covered in a sweet and tangy sauce. The berries were a nice touch to the dish and provided some lovely sweet and piquant flavours to balance out the dish.
Fried Pomfret with Braised Roasted Pork Belly and Cherry Tomatoes
Siew yoke and fish? Well why not? Eat the fish fast though while it’s still crispy!
Crisp Fried Prawn with Pumpkin and Salted Egg Yolk Mousse
This was my ultimate favourite dish of the night and most of the members of the media at my table agreed with me. Utterly delicious with a crispy outer layer and deliciously flavourful soft layer coating the prawns. A definitely must order for any seafood lover!
Slow Boiled Clay Pot Rice with Assorted Wax Meat and Chestnut
This looks like a mess but it was pretty good and as most of us were pretty full by this time there was half a pot left which I happily took home and had for my lunch and dinner the following day. It’s absolutely loaded with delicious meats while the chestnut provided some variance in texture and taste.
Glutinous Rice Dumplings in Sweetened Soya Milk and Ginger Juice with Japanese Sweet Potato Gold Coin Chinese New Year ‘Nian Gau’
A nice and thankfully not too sweet end to the meal.
I really loved the pork dishes but sadly the restaurant will be reverting back to a halal (ie. pork free) status after the Chinese New Year festive season. I think it’s such a pity but then again the restaurant is part of a business and so has to cater to the majority of customers. So do head over and try the non-halal menu while it lasts!
