Mercedes-Benz CLS 400 Launch
Mercedes-Benz Malaysia launched their new generation CLS 400 on 1 April 2015, in a ceremony featuring Louis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg from the Mercedes-Benz AMG Petronas F1 team. The new CLS 400 is a redesigned coupe featuring a new and powerful six-cylinder petrol engine, assistance systems, and futuristic MULTIBEAM LED headlamps.
“Mercedes-Benz has its history deeply rooted in innovation. Launched 10 years ago, the CLS was a critical element in our ambition to lead as two distinct genres, the coupe and sedan has been combined to make the world’s first 4-door coupe. The CLS today is redesigned to bring fascinating details and style to all new heights. It will continue to represent an exceptional development in the four-door coupe not just today but also in the future,” said Mark Raine, Vice President, Passenger Cars Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.
When Mercedes-Benz launched the CLS ten years ago it was somewhat of a paradigm shift, but they eventually won over many fans with their four door coupé – a vehicle that combined the elegance and dynamism of a coupé with the comfort and functionality of a saloon. It was also the first vehicle to offer dynamic LED High Performance headlamps as an option, and together with its bold design, became something of a style icon in the industry.
The new CLS 400 is equipped with the new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps which were designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz. This MULTIBEAM LED headlamp utilises the latest lighting technologies and can optionally adjust the light distribution instantly and automatically to virtually any road and traffic conditions. This gives the driver greater illumination of the road surface and edge of the roadway for a better view without dazzling other car drivers.
This new lighting system uses four (4) control units per vehicle in addition to the camera on the windscreen. These function to calculate the ideal light pattern 100 times per second and control all 24 high-performance LEDs in each precision LED module quickly and individually. Each LED is dimmable in 255 stages.
Each MULTIBEAM LED headlamp also contains a module for the low-beam headlamp, which can be swivelled upwards up to 12 degrees. This provides an active light function, which is also camera-controlled. This works by pre-emptively swivelling the active light function before the driver even turns into the bend, and returns the lights back to the straight-on position before the corner ends, giving the driver the light where it’s needed.
The anticipatory control allows an additional range of between 30 and 60 metres, depending on the traffic situation, and another interesting feature is that before the driver enters onto a roundabout, the cornering light function is activated to the left and right to provide the best visibility at an early stage.
The new MULTIBEAM LED headlamps provide daytime running lamps, side lights and turn signal lamps via multifunctional fibre-optic cable, and also cast a blue light when the vehicle is unlocked.
Under the hood of the CLS 400 is a new 3.0 litre, V6 bi-turbo petrol engine which delivers 333 hp and 480 Nm torque, providing high output potential and extremely high torque at low engine speeds, setting a new benchmark in its segment.
Safety wise, the CLS 400 is equipped with a host of new and enhanced assistance systems. The standard fit features include COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, which can help to avoid rear-end collisions through autonomous brake application if necessary.
The latest assistance systems from the S-Class are also available as standard. These include DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, PRE-SAFE® PLUS, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC including parking in end-on spaces.
The new CLS has a new, free-standing colour display in the head unit with a 20.3 cm screen diagonal (8″), while a redesigned three-spoke sports steering wheel also contributes to the interior’s high quality look and feel. The new AMG Line Plus supplements the AMG Line design and equipment lines comes as a standard package in the CLS 400.
Audiophiles will appreciate the carefully matched technical components and Logic 7® technology from Harman Kardon, which ensure that passengers in all seats enjoy a 360-degree sound experience for both stereo and 5.1 multi-channel recordings. The sound system with its 14 high-performance speakers is specially matched to the particular acoustic conditions in the vehicle. The powerful high-performance DSP amplifier is equipped with a digital signal processor (DSP) which uses its high computing power to control the frequency response and to guarantee a harmonious acoustic sound. In addition, speed-sensitive volume control helps to ensure a uniform audio experience by continuously matching the volume to the vehicle’s speed.
The COMAND Online system is available as a standard package in the new CLS 400, in conjunction with the new 8-inch, free-standing display in the head unit. Both enable you to make calls featuring HD voice which improves voice quality, and surf the internet (without restrictions when the vehicle is stationary) when paired with a Bluetooth®-capable mobile phone with mobile data (LTE compatible).
COMAND Online additionally comes with the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system; digital TV/radio reception is a further option. It also comes with topographical map display, photo-realistic 3D buildings and 3D map rotations, as well as display of NASA satellite images. System features include an animated compass and Google Maps displayed on the head unit. There’s also a Media Interface for connecting an iPod® or iPhone®.
