Headed over to The Tavern in the Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB) brewery in Sungei Way on 23 October 2014 with MHB’s Kelly Siew and Andy Kho for the launch of GAB’s Oktoberfest 2014 campaign. Now visiting a brewery is always something that I look forward to and Oktoberfest is one of my favourite festivals of the year hence I was doubly looking forward to it.
GAB dropped hints to their fans on social media that something big was coming for consumers a few weeks before the launch of GAB’s Oktoberfest celebrations with some questions thrown to the public – does size really matter? Is big better?

The answer was finally revealed when GAB officially unveiled Malaysia’s Biggest Mug which stands 2.6m high and 1.72m wide. The giant replica of GAB’s Oktoberfest 2014 promotional mug, complete with a lid to keep foreign objects like saliva and insects out, created a new record that was endorsed by The Malaysia Book of Records.
The Biggest Mug is made out of fibre glass and took about a month to complete. The giant mug which can actually hold liquid, will be travelling around Peninsular Malaysia (I’ve put the locations at the bottom of this post) so you can have a closer look and partake in Malaysia’s Biggest Mug “Guess the Litre” challenge. The top 5 participants who provide the correct or closest estimated volume of liquid the giant mug can hold, wins a year’s supply of Tiger Beer so all you mathematicians out there, get your calculators out and start counting.

Hans Essaadi, managing director of GAB said: “Oktoberfest is a popular festival that many look forward to annually. And so this year, we decided we are going to commemorate it in a big, extraordinary way; hence the grandeur you see before you. This feat definitely has been a rewarding challenge especially now that we’ve set a new record in The Malaysia Book of Records. Having organised the festival successfully for six years, this is an undeniably proud moment for us here at GAB. We are thrilled to bring you a bigger and better Oktoberfest celebration this 2014. Look out for Malaysia’s Biggest Mug as it travels across the country next month”.

After the speeches and the launch, we got to enjoy some delicious German food with some really awesome sausages by Jarrod & Rawlins, while being entertained by an Oompah band. There were also games such as the beer stein race, and a magician whose tricks and slights of hand which generates a lot of Ooohs and Ahhhs from his audience.
I was busy enjoying myself in The Tavern where we got to enjoy some of the freshest GAB draught beers in the country as well as some bottled beers including the new Smirnoff Ice.

You can bring home the GAB Oktoberfest 2014 stein (the 1 litre one not the giant one) which is available in two designs. To get your hands on one, simply buy four pints/ two jugs/ two buckets/ one (1) tower of either of the participating brands (Tiger, Guinness, Anchor, Heineken, Kilkenny, Kirin, Smirnoff, Strongbow, and Paulaner) for one Oktoberfest mug.
Malaysia’s Biggest Mug will be travelling to a few key locations around the country:
Oct 2: Festival Walk, Ipoh
Oct 3 and 4: Setia Walk, Puchong and Auto City, Penang
Oct 10 and 11: Scott Garden, PJ and Upper Penang Road
Oct 16: Desa Sri Hartamas
