We got to try some Spanish wines made by the 5th oldest winemaking company in the World and first Cava House in Spain – Grupo Codorníu Raventós. Codorníu is the world’s largest producer of cava made by the traditional champagne method (méthode traditionelle). More than 450 years of experience have given Grupo Codorniu the expertise needed to compete at the highest level. Codorniu is the company that invented CAVA in Barcelona back in 1872 and the 5th oldest winery in the world since 1551. Apart from being the cava creators, this family-run business owns some of the world oldest and most prestigous awarded wineries and vineyards in La Rioja, El Priorat (since the XII century), Medonza Argentina or California Napa Valley. Furthermore since 1897 and still today, Grupo Codorniu is official purveyor of the Royal Family House of Spain.

We got to try six (6) different variants that evening – Anna de CODORNIU Blanc de Blancs (today the number one Cava in Spain) and Gran Bach Brut. Rioja wines La Vicalanda Reserva DOCa and Vina Pomal Crianza DOCa. from Aragon, Veranza Chardonnay I.G.P Valle del Cinca, and Veranza Tinto I.G.P Valle del Cinca.

Brand ambassador Mr. Paco Gago led members of the media on a journey with the Spanish wines paired with specially selected canapes from Beach Club Café. Born and raised in Spain and educated in Europe (Spain, the UK, France and Austria), Paco Gago is the appointed Brand Ambassador for Grupo Codorníu Raventós in South-East Asia. His passion for Spanish wines together with his international background and experience as Trade Consultant in the Embassy of Spain in Singapore gave him the opportunity to become part of the family Grupo Codorníu Raventós, Spain’s Cava leader since its inception and today one of the longest standing family business in the world.

The first Juan Valdez Cafe in Malaysia was officially opened on 1 April 2014 at The Intermark along Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. The event was graced by Procafecol’s President Hernán Méndez, Colombian Ambassador, local dignitaries and even Juan Valdez himself (with a donkey delivering coffee beans).

Juan Valdez® is the only internationally recognized brand that belongs to coffee producers. Inspired in the icon that has represented Café de Colombia for over 50 years, in 2002 the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation – a non-profit organization that represents more than 500,000 small Colombian coffee producers – created the Juan Valdez® brand for coffee shops. Years later, after the popularity and acceptance of the brand in coffee shops and products was consolidated, the distribution of Juan Valdez® products in other national and international distribution channels began.

With the opening of the first store in Malaysia, Juan Valdez® Café now has 267 coffee shops worldwide, of which 187 are in Colombia and 80 distributed in 12 other countries: Aruba, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, Panama, South Korea, Spain and the USA. There will be 330 stores operating worldwide by year’s end with openings planned in Latin American as well as others regions and countries. Look out for another five (5) stores opening soon in Malaysia!

This new store is of the Origins flagship format (recently launched last December in Bogotá, the Colombian capital city), which aims at offering consumers a different experience of Colombian regional origins and specialty coffees ways of brewing. It is the first flagship Origins coffee shop outside Colombia, and for the opening of the coffee shop, three Colombian experts at brewing and hospitality from the Juan Valdez® headqurters team and the domestic training team traveled to Malaysia, to impart the Colombian premium coffee culture to the Malaysian team.

The portfolio of products offered in the store includes roasted and packed coffee from different Colombian regions, hot and cold drinks brewed from Colombian premium coffee, a variety of premium pastries developed by a recognized chef, and products for coffee brewing and consumption.
