Arthur Guinness Projects Launch

Arthur Guinness Projects Launch

Guinness launched their Arthur Guinness Projects (AGP) on 18 March 2014 at Publika in Kuala Lumpur. AGP was formerly known as the  Arthur Guinness Fund which was first run in partnership with British Council Malaysia back in 2012 and saw the first 6 Malaysian social entrepreneurs receive more than RM 240,000 in funding, including mentoring and business support. The renamed AGP is designed to champion and celebrate people whose ideas, passion and spirit are enhancing and shaping our culture and identity.

The launch saw over 200 people in attendance to witness and participate in “Buy with Heart”, the first AGP social enterprise Marketplace held in Publika where consumers could learn more, as well as purchase social enterprise products and services. The event also marked the kick off to Wave 2 of the Malaysian Arthur Guinness Projects which is organized in partnership with British Council Malaysia.

“You can create social impact through what you eat, drink and wear; through your landscaping, home improvement, business development services you choose; and the gifts you buy and give. That’s what we wanted showcase here today. We wanted to inspire people to do their bit for the community even through their purchasing decisions, as it can contribute significantly in impacting positive social change in their communities.” said Bruce Dallas, Marketing Director of Guinness Anchor Berhad. “The Arthur Guinness Projects exists to inspire people to do more with their lives and champion those who choose roll up their sleeves and make a change like our social entrepreneurs here today. Every small deed can make a big difference”, he continued.

The event showcased 4 social ventures that received funding from the Arthur Guinness Projects – British Council “Entrepreneurs for Good” Wave 1 program. “The program has inspired us to contribute towards the community in ways initially unimaginable. It has created a brilliant platform for people to come forward and grab the opportunity to turn aspirations into ideas and ideas into reality.” said Rashvin from Biji Biji Initiative.

“The Arthur Guinness Projects – British Council’s Entrepreneurs for Good program offers skills training and mentoring, along with access to UK expertise, peer networks and start-up funding. So through the program we are supporting social entrepreneurs in making positive changes in their communities. In Wave 1, in partnership with the Arthur Guinness Projects we engaged with a network of very talented and passionate social entrepreneurs who grew their businesses, created employment opportunities and had a positive impact on their beneficiaries. We are really delighted to be continuing that partnership as we launch Wave 2 now, aiming to reach even more people. We are looking forward to meeting that next cohort of social entrepreneurs and supporting them to make a positive change”, said Gavin Anderson, Country Director of British Council.

The highlight of the evening was the Dutch auction where several one of a kind, up-cycled products from social enterprise Biji Biji Initiative were auctioned off including a pallet coffee table, bike wheel clock and the bottle bedside lamp (see the photos below).

If you’re keen to get your hands on some of these items you can head over to and see how you can BID for your favourite items online.

The Arthur Guinness Project works in partnership with British Council Malaysia here in Malaysia, and Wave 2 of the program will see another 6 local social projects awarded with funding as well as mentoring and business support. An expert panel will be looking for projects that will inspire people across Malaysia; those that deliver on innovation, creativity, achievability, as well as cultural and social good.

The general public will be able to vote online for the projects that they believe can truly make a difference in the Malaysian community. Voting begins early May to 23rd of May 2014 at

“Arthur Guinness Projects is inspired by our founder, Arthur Guinness. He was a true visionary, one of the original innovators who, along with many generations of the GUINNESS family, made many varied philanthropic gestures. The Arthur Guinness Project is the continuation of this philanthropic mindset and truly demonstrates how Guinness is Made Of More,” said Bruce Dallas.

As part of Guinness Malaysia’s continuous effort to build and support Malaysian social entrepreneurs, RM0.50 cents for every glass of Guinness® purchased at participating outlets nationwide throughout the month of May will go to the Arthur Guinness Projects to continue to fund, support and train future entrepreneurs.
