Casual Dining – Blu Med

[Valentine’s Day Special]

Updated September 2014 – Blu Med has ceased operations

This is also part of the Valentine’s Day series and this is an option that won’t burst your budget. Blu Med is a casual dining restaurant serving traditional and modern Mediterranean fare as well as a selection of wines, beers, and cocktails for you to unwind after a hard day’s work.

Blu Med is located in between The Gardens and Mid Valley Megamall. Just go to Starbucks in Mid Valley then look across to The Gardens and you should easily spot it.

We had the whole upper floor to ourselves which was pretty nice!

Salad of Foie gras Terrine, Fig Vinaigrette and Chocolate Sauce - foie gras and chocolate? Surprisingly it actually tasted quite nice! The chef used dark chocolate not the super sweet milk chocolate you usually find so it really balanced out the richness of the foie gras! Thumbs up for creatively incorporating chocolate into a salad!

Cocoa flavoured ravioli with sweet potato and cinnamon butter sauce - cocoa pasta? Yes but just a hint of it to give it a slight cocoa taste as well as the colour. Once again the cocoa taste balances out the richness of the fragrant cinnamon butter sauce, and the sweetness of the sweet potato. Certainly not your typical ravioli. If you haven't guessed by now, each dish in the the special Valentine's Day set dinner incorporates chocolate.

Roasted duck with caramelised apple orange flavoured chocolate sauce - duck and chocolate? Yes! It actually tasted pretty good. The dish was balanced out with some pieces of orange lending it some acidity. Now a little point to note here - I thought this dish was pretty nice as I quite fancy duck so I don't mind it's strong taste (this is NOT smoked duck).

Blu Med's fondant chocolate with strawberry and ice cream - I'm quite a sucker for chocolate lava puddings and this one was pretty good. Lots of lava which went extremely well with the vanilla ice cream!

The set also comes with your choice of coffee or tea.

My partner-in-crime is not much a fan of duck so we opted to add on a Pan Fried Sea Bass - served with black mussels in chickpea puree.

Now my partner is quite fancies wine so we decided to do a little wine pairing with the Valentine’s Day set menu. The wines are quite decently priced if you’re ordering by glass or if you like you can also order a bottle.

We had the Chardonnay, Merlot, Chianti Ruffino, Prosecco, and both the red and white sangria to go with our meal. Highly recommended to us were both the red and white Ruffino wines which hail from the countryside of the rolling hills of Tuscany (hilly terrain generally produces better wines). Ruffino’s seven estates are globally renowned as producers of some of the best wines from the region and they have been in wine production for over 130 years. Both the red and white Ruffino wines were very pleasant, and easy to drink, with the red having some fruity plum and cherry notes (which went oh so well with our dessert – chocolate and a full bodied red wine = heaven), and I must say that the wines are also very reasonably priced at Blu Med!

I actually think that Blu Med is a pretty decently priced casual dining restaurant, and certainly gives diners an alternative between the expensive restaurants in The Gardens and the eateries/ fast food in Mid Valley Megamall.
