Casual Dining – Kissaten Cafe & Restaurant
[Casual Dining]
I’ve decided to start this new series as well as when you’re dating you can’t always go to fine dining restaurant unless you’re pretty loaded. Decided to head over to Kissaten in Jaya One, Petaling Jaya for a simple dinner. Kissaten means “tearoom” in Japanese and are quite popular with students and working adults in Japan as they would serve breakfast, curry rice and set meals.
Here in Malaysia, Kissaten has expanded on the traditional Japanese menu and added a little Western influence to create a somewhat fusion offering which ranges from the traditional ramen, sashimi and nabe to the Western influenced pizzas, pork and teriyaki burgers, sizzling steaks and salads.
.
Kissaten has some new additions to their menuWas super tempted to have the pork burger but as I’ve tried it before decided to try some other dishes this timeIt was a long day dealing with stupid agencies so I needed a few cups of sake to relax a bit. Why can’t Malaysians in general be more professional? I’ve dealt with some really awesome agencies that work together with you to get the job done for the client however there are also a lot of stupid ones who couldn’t care less about anything except getting their agency commission. My partner for the nightFirst up we decided to have a nabe or Japanese hot pot dish with lots of different ingredients inside. Spot the bacon strips!Cover it and let it cook for a whileAnd after a couple of minutes it’s ready to eat! The broth was savoury and sweet at the same time as it has absorbed the flavours of the ingredients while the ingredients such as mushrooms, broccoli , carrots and lettuce were not too soggy as we didn’t overcook it.A silty smooth chawanmushi with mushrooms on the topDeep fried tau fu – crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Don’t let this one go cold!Char siew pizza – this is the mini version that we custom ordered from the kitchen as we felt that we couldn’t finish the full size one which is much bigger.Buta don – pork with rice with an egg on top cooked Japanese style. Break the yolk and mix it well into the pork and rice. This one is a meal on it’s own.Salmon sashimi – fresh and thick slices of salmonSizzling steak – ok we made a critical error of not tucking into this one when it was served and letting it sit on the hot plate. As a result the meat became well done so unless you’re a fan of well done steaks I suggest you remove the steak from the sizzling hot plate immediately when it’s served or ask the kitchen to ensure it’s cooked rare. Although it was well done we still finished it as it went really well with the garlic sauce. This came with a baked potato on the side.Rainbow cake – nice too look at and it’s covered with white chocolate flakes but as I’m a dark chocolate guy I found it a tad too sweet for my taste.A pint of Paulaner to end the meal
