Carlsberg’s UEFA EURO 2012 Viewing Party

UEFA EURO 2012 – Europe’s premier footballing competition has started and to celebrate this momentous occasion in the world of football (only one other tournament is bigger and that’s the FIFA World Cup) Carlsberg Malaysia organised a viewing party at The Strand, Kota Damansara on 8 June 2012 to watch the opening match between co-host country Poland and Greece. As The Strand is pretty near my house I headed over with a couple of friends as watching in a crowd gives a different atmosphere than watching at home.

Carlsberg Malaysia erected a huge mock stadium with loads of footballl related activities inside
Big screens, table and chairs and of course bars serving ice-cold Carlsberg
The place was packed but we managed to find a good spot in the VIP section
Lots of pre-match entertainment to keep us guests occupied
These young boys gave us a dazzling display of footballing skills
The event got under way with a high-energy percussion band and several dance performances. Guests were kept entertained by co-emcees Terrence S.Gill and Aster Kyle Gunasekera, who were later joined by Adam C and Jay Menon. The MCs gave guests a chance to win some limited edition championship memorabilia and gift vouchers courtesy of through trivia and games on football and UEFA EURO 2012.
Carlsberg Managing Director Soren Ravn gave away the last few ‘golden tickets’ to watch a semi final match in Ukraine to some lucky winners.
Upcoming band Mad Sally (whom I first saw at The Library First Subang some time ago) rocking the stage with some fast numbers. The band’s lead singer can pull off Lady Gaga numbers surprisingly well!
Energetic dance performances had the guests’ attention (especially male guests)
Lots of eye-candy for me!

Soren Ravn, Managing Director of Carlsberg Malaysia, said, “After having spent weeks counting down to this championship, Carlsberg had to make sure our first viewing party delivered mega excitement for those gathered. We promised our consumers and football fans a uniquely Carlsberg football experience at the first viewing party and to deliver as much excitement leading up to the opening match. This has truly given us a great opportunity to connect with consumers and celebrate our shared passion for football and Carlsberg. Now that calls for a Carlsberg!”

Ravn said, “This party is as much about giving our consumers a memorable experience as it is about football. As the No. 1 preferred beer brand in Malaysia and the game’s beer of choice worldwide, Carlsberg takes much pride in bringing great football moments to our consumers.”

“We started off with the UEFA EURO 2012TM trophy landing on Malaysian soil for the first time, followed by a visit by our global ambassador Peter Schmeichel. Then there was the consumer promotion that will take 100 fans to watch the semi final in Donetsk, Ukraine, and the on-ground activities at our trade outlets which are still ongoing. With the start of the tournament finally here, our consumers can now look forward to the Carlsberg viewing parties to be held nationwide.”

On the opening match shown in high definition on big screens, Ravn commented, “With Poland having the home ground advantage and having beaten Greece in quite a number of previous matches, Poland is the favourite among many for this opening match. But we can’t rule out Greece who could emerge as the victor. So may the best team win!”

Well the highly entertaining match ended in a 1-1 draw with both sides playing some wonderful attacking football which led to some drama with a penalty saved, and both teams ending the match with 10 men.

Then on Monday 11 June 2012, I headed over to The Hill in Damansara Heights for the Carlsberg EURO 2012 viewing party featuring the France versus England match.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw. England playing without the suspended Wayne Rooney was rather uncreative. I don’t think they will go far in the tournament. Sigh…

BTW I’m supporting England and the Netherlands. Which team are you supporting?
