Arthur’s Day 2011 rocked Kuala Lumpur with an estimated 20,000 fans in attendance at the concert held in Speed City Kuala Lumpur on the 23rd of September 2011. Now this was my 3rd Arthur’s Day after attending the first two (Black Eyed Peas in 2009 and Flo Rida and Sean Kingston in 2010) and I was pretty excited about it.

What is Arthur’s Day you ask? Where have you been?

The Arthur’s Day party in Kuala Lumpur was the culmination of the 24 hour global celebration and featured a live music concert  by international artiste Taio Cruz with a stellar cast of local and regional acts such as SOLER, Mizz Nina, Dragon Red, Prema Yin, the Kartel group featuring Joe Flizzow, Take-T from Japan and Dandee from Thailand.

“We had an exciting line-up of live performances from some of the world’s most renowned international, regional and local acts. The concert this year really created an EPIC experience for fans and consumers, perfect to celebrate the life and legacy of this remarkable man, Arthur Guinness.” said Yap Swee Leng, Marketing Director of Guinness Anchor Berhad.

Taio’s performance certainly had the crowd singing along to his hits. “I am delighted to be part of the Arthur’s Day celebrations. Every year since it began in 2009 it’s been an EPIC celebration and this year was no exception.  It was awesome to meet and party with my fans here in Malaysia. Malaysia is such an awesome country with awesome people. I had a great time and hope to come back if i get the chance. Thank you GUINNESS® for the opportunity. It was an EPIC experience for me.” said Taio Cruz.

This year, as a reward from GUINNESS® Malaysia for a great 252 years, fans and consumers needed to attain these money-can’t-buy exclusive invites to the event from various parties and events including 10 Malaysia’s Hottest Bloggers members who gave out passes via contests on their blogs.

Anyway I left my office at 8.00pm (couldn’t leave earlier sigh…), went to pick up Malaysia’s Hottest Bloggers’ newest member Wan Ting (check out her blog at and her friend Melody (who I think is rather cute!) and headed over to Speed City.

Unfortunately a couple of thousand people were also trying to get to Arthur’s Day and the increased amount of traffic meant I only got there at 11.00pm. Now a lot of people are blaming the organisers for the traffic but from what I observed it was the roadworks near the Seri Kembangan turn-off which cause the traffic jam. Now our very efficient and professional police force was on hand at and around Speed City but what did they do? NOTHING! Yeah…Malaysia Boleh!

Ok lar…they did do something. They stood around in little groups staring at the hot babes walking to the concert venue.

Anyway, in spite of me getting there rather late I still managed to have a good time. Here’s what went down (besides the Guinness draught that is) …

Ahhh the sight of the lovely Rean soothed my nerves after the 2 hour jam. She promptly handed me a Guinness draught and that started the party for me! Thanks Rean!
Now I ran all the way from the carpark to the event venue, registered, got my media pass, and dashed to the VIP section which offered an unobstructed view of the stage!
Oh yeah along the way in (the running and all) I stopped to snap a pic of the pretty Carace and Weena! Lovely!
Burn (L) & Yuri (R) performing “The Call”, this year’s Arthur’s Day theme song
Prema Yin shakin her booty!
Twin brothers Dino & Julio of Soler from Macau had the ladies in the crowd screming their lungs out...
And last but not least the headliner for the event - Taio Cruz!
Snapped a pic with the pretty Moon and Jessica!

The artistes come out for the finale toast "To Arthur!"
A fireworks display ending the show with a bang!
Then I brought some of the MHB girls over to the Arthur's Lounge for the VIP after-party!

At the end of the night, as part of GAB’s Drink sensibly initiative, partygoers were treated to free water and were invited to wind down at the chill out zone with food and drinks. They also had the chance to learn about drinking sensibly through interactive games and activities. This I thought was a very good idea as drink driving is dangerous for yourself, your passengers and other road users. Always party responsibly peeps!

In the run up to Arthur’s Day, GUINNESS® Malaysia also hosted a series of live music parties aptly themed arTHURSDAY and ran promotions on Guinness throughout the month of August and September. Consumers enjoyed the celebrations at over 2000 pubs and bars nationwide including Sabah and Sarawak. I myself managed to catch a few arTHURSDAY events including the launch at the Beer Factory, and parties at Finnegans Mid Valley, and Sid’s TTDI (check my older posts or click ‘Guinness’ which is under ‘Drinks’ in the dropdown menu).

10 lucky winners from East Malaysia also won an all expense paid trip to the Arthur’s Day concert coupled with the GUINNESS® VIP Treatment. The winners stayed at the Palace of the Golden Horses, were driven to the concert in a limousine, were hosted at the VIP lounge and got to experience the Arthur’s Day concert in true VIP fashion.

A key initiative for the Arthur’s Day celebrations this year was to promote local emerging talent by providing them a platform to showcase their music locally and globally. In line with this, a competition was launched to discover up and coming Malaysian music acts to be part of the Arthur’s Day line-up. 6 talented local bands vied for the opportunity to perform with global and regional artistes in the music industry.

The 2 winners – Dragon Red and Prema Yin, selected based on consumer votes performed to a rocking crowd at the Arthur’s Day concert as they kicked off the celebrations.

Prema Yin said: “We are thrilled and excited to be part of the Arthur’s Day 2011 concert. It is certainly an EPIC experience for me to perform on the same stage as global icons in the music industry. Thank you GUINNESS® for making my dream come true and for giving me this fantastic opportunity”.

“We would like to thank our fans for voting for us. We are extremely excited to be part of this global celebration. We would also like to thank GUINNESS® for the opportunity to be part of this EPIC event. The line-up for this year’s celebration is phenomenal and we had an awesome party with them and our fans!” said Landslyde from Dragon Red.

So to recap what Arthur’s Day is all about…

Arthur’s Day is celebrated around the world to honour the date Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease on the St James Gate Brewery in 1759, and whose legacy has brought us the globally celebrated iconic black brew, GUINNESS®.

The worldwide celebrations saw millions of consumers in all continents across the world taking part in a global toast ‘To Arthur’ which started in Ireland at 17:59 on 22 September and ended in Kuala Lumpur at Speed City Selangor Turf Club on 23 September 2011.

This year’s event continued to support the philanthropic legacy of Arthur Guinness through the Arthur Guinness Fund, which supports social entrepreneurship around the world.

*The 4 photos of the artistes are courtesy of Guinness Malaysia as obviously I got there too late to watch any of the performances except Taio Cruz (sad sad sad!!!). The rest (and the video) were taken with my trusty little G12.
