The Wok Cafe
Headed over to The Wok Cafe with the girls for our second daytime food review on a bright Saturday afternoon. Located in The Strand, Kota Damansara, parking at The Wok Cafe was a breeze as the shops around the area were not 100% occupied yet. Arriving at 2.00pm for a late lunch, we were surprised to see a many tables of people having a late lunch.
The view of The Wok Cafe from the outsideCheck out the inside!Owner Mervyn tore down everything he could move from his restaurant in Penang and carefully moved it to his new restaurant in Kota Damansara. The amount of historical stuff on display here is simply amazing!Char Kuey Teow - RM9.00 - so good that after our visit I would pop by just to ta pau this for my family whenever I'm around the area (which is pretty often as I stay in a neighbourhood just 5 mins away)Prawn Mee - RM9.00 - Another of my fav Penang hawker fare! The chilli boh is served separate to cater to those who can't eat spicy food. The sweet and flavourful broth flavoured by the prawns was so reminicent of Penang that I didn't let any go to waste!Curry Mee - RM9.00 - Another mainstay of Penang hawker fare. Again the chilli boh is served separate. Delicious and flavourful, just the way it should be!Paku Sambal - RM11.00 (S) RM16.00 (M) RM21.00 (L) - a spicy vege dish with prawns to boot! Nice!Roast Pork Garlic - RM17.00 (S) RM24.00 (M) RM32.00 (L) - I just love siew yoke and I will definitely order this dish the next time I'm eating at The Wok Cafe! Crunchy, flavourful and fragrant! Yum!!!Fresh Gulai Tumis Snapper - RM 18..00 (S) RM24.00 (M) RM34.00 (L) - eat this dish with rice to fully enjoy the sauce. In fact the sauce can even go with the other dishes such as the Roast Pork Garlic and the Tau U Bak!Jiu Hoo Char - RM 12.00 (S) RM17.00 (M) RM22.00 (L) - use the lettuce leaves to wrap it up like a popiah, dip into the chilli then into your mouth!Penang Loh Bak & TauKua - RM12.00 (1 set, 2 rolls) - a must have appetiser when I'm having hawker fare in Penang! The food at the Wok Cafe tastes really authentic simply because it is! Owner and chef Mervyn is a Penang boy!Tau U Bak - RM15.00 (S) RM22.00 (M) RM28.00 (L) - essentially pork slow cooked in soya sauce with some other ingredients. My grandma makes the best but this one is definitely a close 2nd! Tender chunks of pork and even an egg thrown in. Eat with rice!Cendol Gula Melaka - RM5.00 - Ahhhhh my fav dessert! Although admittedly I never eat the red beans.Penang Ice Kacang - RM7.00 - some say the addition of ice cream on top originated from Bentong in Pahang but actually I don't care where it originated from. I just like eating it!Sago Gula Melaka - RM4.00 - for those of you with a real sweet toothSago Durian - RM 7.00 - Durian lovers rejoice! I LOVED this one! So hard to find nice durian desserts around!Mango Pudding - mango, jelly and vanilla sauce! Share this one though. The girls with owner Mervyn and wife
The verdict – The Wok Cafe is so far the only place where I eat Penang food outside Penang. Yes I’m that picky about my Penang food since my Penang relatives and friends have been taking me to the best places to eat on the island since I was small.
The Penang and Nyonya fare are both good and reasonably priced. There’s tons of stuff to see including a photo of Rose Chan. Don’t know who she is? Ask your father hahaha! Call ahead to book if you’re going in a big group during peak hours on weekends.
