OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia launched the JAECOO J5 EV on 2 September 2026. The JAECOO J5 EV is the brand’s first fully electric vehicle in the country, at a price of RM118,800 on-the-road without insurance. The J5 EV is a B-segment electric sport utility vehicle. According to the company, it combines electric performance, driver-assistance technology, practical everyday usability and lifestyle-oriented features aimed at Malaysian drivers.

OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia described the launch as more than the introduction of another electric model, saying it reflects the company’s commitment to making electric mobility more accessible and practical for Malaysian drivers, supported by an ownership ecosystem that includes home charging, public charging access, long-term warranty coverage and an EV-ready nationwide network.

OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia said the J5 EV was designed with a distinctive exterior for the electric SUV segment. The vehicle features an Active Grille Shutter, which the company said supports aerodynamic efficiency, along with 18-inch wheels that the company said contribute to both design and performance. The SUV has 174mm of ground clearance and a wading depth of 450mm, which the company said gives drivers greater confidence across different road conditions.

The cabin includes a 1.45-metre panoramic glass roof. Storage capacity comprises a 35-litre front trunk and 480 litres of rear boot space, expanding to 1,284 litres with the rear seats folded. The vehicle is also equipped with a 540-degree high-definition surround-view camera system for manoeuvring and parking.

The J5 EV is powered by an electric drive system producing 155kW of maximum power and 288Nm of maximum torque, giving a 0–100km/h acceleration time of 7.7 seconds, according to the company.

Its 58.9kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, supplied by Chinese battery manufacturer CATL, provides a range of up to 461km under the NEDC testing cycle. The vehicle supports 11kW AC charging, with a full charge from 10 percent to 100 percent taking approximately seven hours, the company said, adding that the charging setup was designed to accommodate a range of ownership needs.

OMODA & JAECOO said the J5 EV is designed to provide greater convenience and confidence behind the wheel through a comprehensive suite of 19 Level 2+ advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) features, supporting drivers across a range of driving situations. These include lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, lane departure prevention, blind spot detection, lane change assist, full-speed adaptive cruise control, front vehicle departure alert, integrated cruise assist, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear cross-traffic braking, autonomous emergency braking, traffic jam assist, evasive steering assist, door opening warning, active speed limiter, rear collision warning, multi-collision braking and emergency lane keeping assist.

The company said the vehicle’s body structure has a torsional rigidity rating of 35,900 Nm/deg, which it said contributes to structural integrity and passive occupant protection. The J5 EV is also fitted with what the company describes as the JAECOO smart ecosystem, a system connecting drivers to vehicle functions and information.

The J5 EV includes a Pet Mode and a Camping Mode, along with a 3.3kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function that allows compatible electrical equipment to be powered from the vehicle. The company said these features, along with a range of dedicated accessories, are intended to enhance the SUV’s versatility and adaptability for outdoor and leisure use.

The J5 EV comes with a seven-year, 150,000km vehicle warranty and a 10-year, 200,000km warranty on its high-voltage battery. OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia said the vehicle is backed by an EV-ready nationwide network of 56 showrooms and 53 service centres. The company said this network, together with home-charging solutions and public charging support, is intended to support customers throughout their EV ownership.

The launch of the J5 EV also marks a milestone in OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia’s local manufacturing journey. The vehicle is assembled under a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) programme at the Chery Corporate Malaysia factory in Shah Alam, marking the brand’s entry into local new-energy-vehicle production in Malaysia. The company said the initiative was intended to support local manufacturing capability, technical expertise and the wider automotive supply chain, while reinforcing its long-term commitment to the country’s automotive industry. It described the J5 EV as a foundational model for JAECOO’s wider electrification roadmap in Malaysia.

The JAECOO J5 EV is sold as a single, well-equipped variant priced at RM118,800, on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of the standard warranty. First deliveries are scheduled to begin by 31 October 2026. The vehicle is available in three exterior colours — Alpine Green, Fjord Grey and Carbon Crystal Black — giving customers a choice of finish to suit their individual style.

For the first 1,000 units delivered, OMODA & JAECOO Malaysia is offering a launch package valued at RM10,000. The package includes one year of free insurance, valued at RM3,000; three years of free data connectivity, valued at RM1,000; a 7kW JAECOO home charger, valued at RM3,300; a JAECOO V2L connector, valued at RM700; and a set of JAECOO J5 lifestyle accessories — a sub-woofer, karaoke set and torch light — valued at RM2,000.

Customers who take up the launch package will also receive one year of unlimited charging credits on the JomCharge charging network, which the company said covers more than 1,353 charging stations nationwide.

For Malaysian drivers weighing their first move into a fully electric vehicle, the J5 EV’s positioning is worth noting: it enters the market as a single, fully specified variant rather than a tiered line-up, which simplifies the buying decision even if it removes the option of a cheaper base model. At RM118,800, it sits within a segment of the market that has grown more competitive over the past two years as Chinese-affiliated brands have expanded their EV offerings in Malaysia, giving buyers a wider spread of choices than existed even a few years ago.

The inclusion of a seven-year vehicle warranty and a ten-year battery warranty addresses one of the more common hesitations among prospective EV buyers — long-term confidence in battery health and repair costs — and is a detail worth weighing alongside the purchase price itself. Similarly, the option to have a home charger, insurance and connectivity bundled into a launch package, rather than sourced separately, may ease some of the early logistical questions that come with owning an EV for the first time, particularly for households doing this for the first time.

The local CKD assembly at the Shah Alam plant is also relevant beyond the factory floor: locally assembled models have historically been positioned more competitively on price in Malaysia, and continued investment of this kind could support servicing capacity and parts availability as the installed base of these vehicles grows. For everyday buyers, that can translate into shorter wait times for parts or service appointments down the line, though this will become clearer only as more units reach the road.
