TAG Heuer has unveiled the Monaco Chronograph Stopwatch, a limited-edition timepiece celebrating the Swiss luxury watchmaker’s historic partnership as the first title partner of the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco.
The new release, announced Friday from the company’s La Chaux-de-Fonds headquarters, draws inspiration from the precision timing instruments that defined motorsport in the 1960s and 1970s, when Heuer stopwatches were standard equipment for race timekeepers.
The Monaco Chronograph Stopwatch pays homage to the original TAG Heuer Monaco, which revolutionised watchmaking when it debuted in 1969 as the first square automatic chronograph. That groundbreaking timepiece gained legendary status two years later when actor Steve McQueen wore it in the 1971 film “Le Mans,” cementing its connection to motorsport culture.
The new model features a distinctive black circular layout against an opaline silver background, enhanced by a red minute track that encircles the dial’s perimeter. High-contrast white markers and hands ensure instant readability, while blackened hour indexes add visual depth. A red lacquered chronograph second hand serves as a striking focal point.
The vintage Heuer logo appears in white against the black circular background, connecting the timepiece to its heritage. True to Monaco tradition, the crown remains positioned on the left side of the case.
Crafted in black DLC-coated titanium, the case combines lightweight durability with contemporary aesthetics while maintaining the Monaco’s iconic square form. At its core, the watch houses the Calibre 11 movement, creating a mechanical link to the original Monaco chronograph.
The timepiece will be produced in a limited run of 970 pieces, a deliberate reference to the 1970s decade that shaped TAG Heuer’s motorsport involvement. Each watch comes with a black perforated calfskin strap designed to evoke racing gloves, and will be delivered in custom packaging that reflects the timepiece’s black, red, and white colour scheme.
The launch coincides with TAG Heuer’s new role as title partner of the Monaco Grand Prix, marking a significant milestone in the relationship between luxury timekeeping and Formula 1’s most prestigious race.
