GIRARD-PERREGAUX: Deep Diver

Swiss luxury watchmaker Girard-Perregaux has announced the return of its legendary Deep Diver timepiece, originally launched in 1969, through a collaboration with UK-based Bamford Watch Department. The revival forms part of the brand’s exclusive Legacy Editions collection, limited to just 350 pieces worldwide.

The original Deep Diver, Reference 9108, made its debut during the height of the 1960s cultural revolution, featuring a distinctive cushion-shaped case and the innovative Gyromatic system. The watch gained legendary status for its bold design elements, including a 14-facet bezel and striking red dial that established it as more than just a diving instrument.

The new Deep Diver maintains the cushion-shaped case design from the 1969 original while incorporating dial aesthetics inspired by the 1971 edition. Constructed from lightweight Grade 5 titanium, the 40.30mm by 38.00mm case features the original’s distinctive crown positioning at 2 and 4 o’clock, contributing to the watch’s symmetrical design philosophy.

The modern interpretation showcases bold blue, orange, and white color schemes with a date window and rotating inner bezel adjustable via the 2 o’clock crown. Hands and markers feature luminous material that glows blue in low light conditions, while the typography draws inspiration from the original’s retro-futuristic numerals.

At the heart of the timepiece lies the GP03300 calibre, an in-house movement crafted at Girard-Perregaux’s La Chaux-de-Fonds facility. The self-winding movement measures just 3.36mm thick and provides a minimum 46-hour power reserve. Its oscillating weight features circular Côtes de Genève decoration, while bridges showcase linear Côtes de Genève, polished bevels, and mirror-polished screws.

The movement is visible through a blue metallized sapphire crystal caseback adorned with a trident emblem – a tribute to Neptune and the watch’s aquatic heritage. Technical specifications include a 28,800 vibrations per hour frequency, 218 components, and 27 jewels.

The timepiece emphasizes versatility through an integrated quick-release system allowing tool-free strap changes. Each watch comes with a blue rubber strap and includes an additional orange strap, both mounted on titanium pin buckles.

The Legacy Editions collection previously featured the limited edition Casquette, originally released in 1976. These reinterpretations blend heritage designs with modern materials and craftsmanship, appealing to collectors and brand enthusiasts seeking contemporary takes on historic timepieces.

With over 234 years of watchmaking heritage, more than 80 patents, and over 30 movements in its catalogue, Girard-Perregaux has consistently maintained its position at the forefront of Swiss Haute Horlogerie. The company pioneered the watchmaking manufacture concept in 1791 and introduced the iconic Tourbillon with Three Bridges in 1867.

The Girard-Perregaux Deep Diver will be retailing in Malaysia at RM69,800
