Textron Aviation Unveils the Next Generation of Cessna Citation Business Jets

Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3

Textron Aviation marked a new era in business aviation today with the introduction of three next-generation Cessna Citation light jets: the M2 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3, and CJ4 Gen3. The announcement, made on the eve of the National Business Aviation Association — Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE), showcases significant technological advances in safety and pilot interface.

“Today we unveiled the future of flight and the next generation of Cessna Citation light jets — the M2 Gen3, CJ3 Gen3 and CJ4 Gen3 — to carry on the iconic legacy of the trusted Citation brand while introducing cutting-edge advancements and technology. With the inclusion of revolutionary Garmin Emergency Autoland technology, as well as all-new Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics in the CJ4 Gen3, these aircraft promise to elevate the flying experience. Adding the Garmin Emergency Autoland system to our entire Citation light jet family lineup represents a monumental leap in aviation technology. As the world’s first certified system of its kind, Autoland offers not just an advancement in automated flight capabilities but a profound enhancement in passenger and pilot peace of mind. The system stands as a guardian against loss of control following pilot incapacitation, offering automated emergency communications and landing when needed and providing unparalleled peace of mind to pilots and passengers.”

Ron Draper, president and CEO

The flagship CJ4 Gen3, scheduled to enter service in 2026, will be the first business jet to feature the next-generation Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics suite. The M2 Gen3 and CJ3 Gen3 are expected to follow in 2027.

Features of this all-new avionics suite include:

  • A new procedure selector allows intuitive, interactive adjustments for approach transitions
  • All primary displays are enhanced, with interactive multi touch technology that lets pilots easily zoom and change waypoints and interact with the system
  • A flat, intuitive menu interface helps pilots easily navigate across avionic systems and flight operations, so everything they need is only a touch away
  • Interactive slide-outs on the engine indicating strip let pilots easily access engine and system settings for more efficient, streamlined operations
  • Secondary display units are 40% larger than previous versions and allow Linked View to primary displays for easier viewing
  • The Garmin Control Unit in the CJ4 Gen3 gives added confidence, allowing pilots to easily assume manual operation of the avionics, giving an alternate method of control
  • Fewer buttons give pilots simplified, streamlined control

A standout feature across all three new models is the integration of Garmin Emergency Autoland technology, complemented by fully integrated Garmin Autothrottles. The aircraft also includes advanced safety features such as Runway Occupancy Awareness and Advanced 3D SafeTaxi, enhancing airport navigation and obstacle avoidance.

“As the first in the industry to announce the next-generation Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics, the CJ4 Gen3 merges sophistication with simplicity, offering advanced features and intuitive, seamless control. This aircraft is designed to keep pilots a step ahead in the cockpit and aids customers in moving seamlessly throughout the entire Citation light jet fleet.”

Lannie O’Bannion, senior vice president, Global Sales and Flight Operations

In a move to support its existing customer base, Textron Aviation announced that current Citation M2 Gen2 with autothrottles and CJ3 Gen2 owners will have the opportunity to upgrade their aircraft with Emergency Autoland technology through a future service bulletin.

The CJ4 Gen3, which is expected to operate under the 525 type rating, boasts the most standard features in its class and promises nearly 10 percent lower operating costs compared to competitors. The aircraft features enhanced avionics hardware offering faster processing speeds and increased connectivity, with software-based updates ensuring future adaptability.

The CJ4 Gen3 offers a luxurious experience that incorporates input on what owners and operators value most. Additional new features in the CJ4 Gen3 include:

  • Lithium-ion batteries to provide enhanced starting power and elevate reliability for more efficient cold weather operations
  • New winglets with enhanced lighting for an elevated ramp presence
  • Seamless integration of real-time data with LinxUs to support owners and operators in efficiently planning for maintenance and repairs
  • Improved cabin acoustics to create an exceptional experience for everyone on board
  • Upgraded flight deck lighting to provide illumination where pilots need it — including map lighting, overhead flood lighting and even side pocket lighting

Convention attendees can experience the new technology firsthand through a CJ3 Gen3 mockup and CJ4 Gen3 cockpit demonstration at Henderson Executive Airport during the NBAA-BACE show.

Cessna’s Latest Business Jet Takes to the Skies in Maiden Flight

The next generation of private aviation reached a milestone in early October as Textron Aviation’s Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3 prototype completed its first successful test flight, the company announced on 21 October 2024 at the National Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE).

The prototype aircraft, piloted by senior test pilot Corey Eckhart and chief test pilot Ed Wenninger, completed a nearly two-hour flight from Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita. During the initial test, the crew evaluated the aircraft’s new avionics systems, propulsion, environmental controls, and flight systems.

“The first flight of the CJ4 Gen3 prototype aircraft marks a major step forward in the flight test program, paving the way for future certification and delivery to customers. Our flight test pilots reported that the aircraft flew well and performed to the levels we anticipated. The program will now move into a rigorous testing phase, ensuring the aircraft meets the highest performance standards.”

Chris Hearne, senior vice president, Engineering & Programs

The CJ4 Gen3 marks a technological leap forward as the first business jet to feature the Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics suite. This next-generation system promises to reduce pilot workload through enhanced touchscreen controls and improved flight deck workflow. The aircraft also incorporates Garmin Autothrottles and Emergency Autoland systems, setting new standards for operational safety and efficiency.

Powered by twin Williams International FJ44-4A turbofan engines, the CJ4 Gen3 will undergo extensive testing of its systems and overall performance before its anticipated entry into service in 2026.

The development of the CJ4 Gen3 represents Textron Aviation’s continued investment in its Citation brand, which has maintained its position as the market leader in business aviation. The aircraft is being designed and manufactured at Textron Aviation’s facilities, a subsidiary of Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT).
