The art and craft of Scottish whisky-making took centre stage at EQ Kuala Lumpur on 20 August 2024, as Bunnahabhain distillery manager Andrew Brown led an intimate master class that transported participants to the rugged shores of Islay, Scotland’s renowned whisky-making island.

The exclusive event, held at the hotel’s sophisticated Blue lounge on the 51st floor overlooking Kuala Lumpur, drew whisky enthusiasts and connoisseurs who were treated to an in-depth exploration of one of Scotland’s most distinguished distilleries. Brown, who journeyed from one of Scotland’s most remote distilleries for this special engagement, shared his extensive knowledge of the whisky-making process, from mash to cask.

The master class offered a sensory journey through the complexities of whisky appreciation, with particular attention to the colour, nose, and taste profiles that define exceptional spirits. Unlike many of its Islay neighbours, the distillery is known for producing unpeated whiskies that are natural in colour and non-chill filtered. Brown demonstrated how these production choices contribute to the whisky’s distinctive character, using the distillery’s flagship 12 Year Old Islay Single Malt as an example of their commitment to traditional methods.

The evening continued with a tasting of the distillery’s premium aged expressions. The 18 Year Old whisky, with its warm notes of dried fruit, sherry, and toffee, drew appreciative murmurs from the audience. The prestigious 25 Year Old single malt, featuring complex layers of spiced oak, caramel, and berries and cream, proved to be a highlight of the tasting session.
