In a significant move that marks the expansion of its product lineup in Malaysia, SAIC Motor Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. has announced the introduction of two new models to its MG brand: the MG5 sedan and the MG HS SUV. The announcement, made on 22 August 2024, in Kuala Lumpur, comes as the company opens bookings for these vehicles, signalling a new chapter in MG’s presence in the Malaysian automotive landscape. The introduction of these new models coincides with MG’s centennial celebration, highlighting the brand’s rich heritage and its continued commitment to innovation in the automotive industry.

“Today isn’t just about unveiling new models; it’s about celebrating MG’s 100 years of passion-driven innovation. We believe the new MG5 sedan and MG HS SUV will captivate customers with their blend of style, performance, and value.”

Mr Steven Du, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

The MG5, positioned as a B-segment sedan, is set to make a bold statement in its class. Notably, SAIC Motor Malaysia claims it to be the longest and widest in its segment, with dimensions of 4,675mm in length, 1,842mm in width, and a wheelbase of 2,680mm. This spacious design is complemented by a distinctive fastback coupe silhouette, aimed at drivers who seek to stand out on the road. The exterior features of the MG5 include a striking ducktail spoiler, an aggressive 3D front grille, automatic LED headlights with Daytime Running Lights (DRL), and 17-inch Tomahawk alloy wheels, all contributing to its sporty and modern aesthetic.

Under the hood, the MG5 is equipped with a 1.5L petrol engine, delivering 114PS and 150Nm of torque. This powerplant is paired with an 8-speed iCVT automatic transmission, a combination that the company states has undergone extensive durability testing of 2.35 million kilometers. The interior of the MG5 is designed with a focus on driver comfort and connectivity, featuring a 7-inch LCD virtual cockpit, a 10.25-inch floating infotainment system, and a three-spoke leather steering wheel with integrated controls.

Safety is a key focus for the MG5, with the inclusion of the MG PILOT driver assist safety system. This comprehensive package includes features such as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Collision Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. These advanced systems are complemented by standard safety features including Electronic Stability Program, Anti-Lock Brake system (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction and Cornering Brake controls, and six SRS Airbags.

The MG HS SUV, the second model introduced, is set to broaden MG’s offerings in the popular SUV segment. It will be available in two variants: the MG HS Standard and the MG HS Lux. Both versions are powered by a 1.5L Turbocharged petrol engine coupled with a 7-speed Twin Clutch transmission, capable of producing up to 162PS and 250Nm of torque. SAIC Motor Malaysia claims that this powertrain is designed with a lifespan of up to 320,000 kilometers, emphasizing long-term reliability.

The exterior design of the MG HS features new bi-functional LED headlights, a bold front grille, and a redesigned bumper, creating what the company describes as a more aggressive and luxurious appearance. The rear of the vehicle sports LED taillights and dual exhaust outlets, while 18-inch diamond-cut wheels and a panoramic sunroof add to its premium feel.

Inside, the MG HS boasts high-quality, soft-touch materials and what the company calls “Sports Seats” for the front driver and passenger. The interior ambiance is enhanced by 64-theme ambient lighting. A unique feature of the MG HS is its Super Sport Mode, which the company claims enhances the SUV’s performance through increased throttle response, higher RPM shift points, and more precise steering.

The MG HS is equipped with a 12.3-inch virtual cluster display offering four display themes, complemented by a 10.1-inch high-resolution infotainment display. This system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as MG’s proprietary iSMART phone connectivity, allowing users to control various vehicle functions remotely. Additional features include a 360-degree view camera, Bluetooth key function, and the ability to activate the air conditioning via a mobile device.

In terms of practicality, the MG HS comes with a power tailgate and offers a cargo capacity ranging from 463 liters to 1,287 liters with the rear seats folded down. Safety features are comprehensive, including six SRS Airbags and a suite of MG PILOT advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These include Front Collision Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assistance, Lane Departure Warning and Prevention, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Door Opening Warning.

Both the MG5 and MG HS come with attractive warranty packages. Buyers will benefit from a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty on the vehicle and a 7-year unlimited mileage warranty on the powertrain (engine and transmission). This extensive coverage underscores SAIC Motor Malaysia’s confidence in the reliability and durability of its products.

The pricing strategy for these new models appears to be competitive. The MG5 is expected to be priced below RM100,000, while the MG HS Standard is estimated to be priced below RM130,000, and the HS Lux below RM150,000. These price points suggest that SAIC Motor Malaysia aims to offer feature-rich vehicles at accessible price points in the Malaysian market.

Colour options for the MG5 include Nuclear Yellow, Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Black Pearl, and Camden Grey, providing a range of choices to suit different tastes. The MG HS will be available in four colours: Dynamic Red, Arctic White, Black Pearl, and Camden Grey.

As part of the launch strategy, SAIC Motor Malaysia plans to showcase these new models at selected MG Motor Dealer showrooms across the country. While official launch dates are yet to be announced, the company is encouraging interested customers to visit their website at http://www.mgmalaysia.com for more information and updates.

This expansion of MG’s product line in Malaysia represents a significant step for SAIC Motor Malaysia, the official distributor of MG cars in the country. As a subsidiary of SAIC Motor, one of the largest automotive companies in China and a Fortune Global 500 company, SAIC Motor Malaysia is leveraging its parent company’s resources and technology to strengthen MG’s position in the competitive Malaysian automotive market.
