Cessna Citation Ascend Program Advances with Successful Certification Tests and Extensive Flight Testing

Textron Aviation provided an update on 13 May 2024 regarding progress on the Cessna Citation Ascend program. The prototype aircraft has completed over 350 flight hours and numerous tests including extreme weather, bird strike simulation, braking performance, and system strength evaluations. Unveiled in 2023, the Citation Ascend is expected to enter service in 2025. This new midsize jet boasts an advanced cockpit with autothrottle, improved performance with increased payload and range, and a luxurious cabin.
The testing process included simulating extreme hot and cold weather conditions to ensure all systems function properly. Bird strike tests were also conducted alongside braking performance evaluation and simulated tire bursts. Additionally, the strength of the cockpit and cabin windows under static and residual pressure was assessed.
Chris Hearne, senior vice president, Engineering & Programs
“With the prototype aircraft’s successful completion of rigorous certification tests and over 350 flight test hours, we are confident in the development progress of the Citation Ascend. The success of the program to date highlights the skill and commitment of our teams in designing and delivering the best aviation experience for customers.”
Development is also ongoing for the Citation Ascend’s Iron Bird, a ground-based test system that replicates the aircraft’s avionics, electrical, and engine controls. This allows pilots to familiarize themselves with the systems and practice various flight scenarios.
The Citation Ascend is equipped with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545D engines, recently certified by Transport Canada. These new engines offer better fuel efficiency, increased thrust, and longer flight times. They achieve this through advanced materials and technologies, including a more efficient high-pressure compressor and an improved single-stage high-pressure turbine module. The PW545D engines also feature Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC), which enables the autothrottle function and optimizes engine performance for reduced pilot workload.
