Bell Reveals Bell Aircraft Laboratory for Future Autonomy Fly-by-Wire Operations

Bell Textron Inc. unveiled its Aircraft Laboratory for Future Autonomy (ALFA) on 7 May 2024. Developed by Bell’s Advanced Programs team, ALFA is a flying testbed dedicated to exploring autonomous flight capabilities. This innovative platform allows for the execution of flight maneuvers with a focus on safety. The key feature is the integration of a fly-by-wire system, a crucial step in developing future autonomous controls for Bell’s commercial aircraft. This technology aims to reduce pilot workload while enhancing overall safety.

“Fly-by-wire flight, coupled with additional capability that are being integrated into ALFA, provides a great foundation for Bell to expand on its autonomous capabilities. This aircraft will serve as a flying lab that will inform future autonomous technology development, which we can ultimately leverage to deliver the best rotorcraft solutions to global operators.”

Jason Hurst, executive vice president, Engineering, Bell

ALFA’s design separates safety functions from flight control functions. This allows for the rapid development and testing of novel flight control technologies without compromising overall safety. The aircraft successfully completed its maiden flight at Bell’s Canadian facility before being transferred to the Bell Flight Research Center in Texas for further exploration. Bell remains committed to pioneering advanced solutions for both current and future customers. Their Advanced Programs team is constantly pushing boundaries to elevate Bell’s offerings in the commercial and military sectors.
