Girard-Perregaux unveils a new chapter in the Laureato story, their iconic timepiece that debuted in 1975. The Laureato Chronograph Ti49 marries the model’s intricate case design with a groundbreaking material – Grade 5 titanium. This marks the first time this coveted alloy graces a classic Laureato reference. Beyond its strength, Grade 5 titanium boasts lightness, exceptional corrosion resistance, and is hypoallergenic.
The tale behind the Laureato Chronograph Ti49 intertwines the paths of two remarkable men, each driven by an insatiable curiosity. In 1791, a young Jean-François Bautte (1772-1837) embarked on his watchmaking journey in Geneva, laying the foundation for what would become Girard-Perregaux. Across the English Channel, that very same year, William Gregor (1761-1817) discovered a mysterious metal in Cornwall – titanium, named after the Greek titans. Though 1400 kilometers separated them, both Bautte and Gregor were united by a thirst for knowledge and innovation.
Fast forward to the 20th century, scientists developed processes to isolate titanium in pure form. Grade 5 titanium, a specific alloy perfected in 1951, emerged as a marvel of material science. This wonder metal, composed of 90% titanium, 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, and trace elements, offered an unmatched combination of lightness, strength, and corrosion resistance. These very qualities make it ideal for watchmaking, not to mention its captivating ability to be polished to a brilliant shine.

While challenging and expensive to machine, Grade 5 titanium elevates the Laureato Chronograph Ti49 to new heights. The resulting case and bracelet possess a paradoxical quality – appearing both warm and undeniably cool – a testament to the expertise of Girard-Perregaux.
Originally christened the “Quartz Chronometer” in 1975, the Laureato earned the affectionate nickname “Laureato” (meaning “graduate” in Italian) from Italian connoisseurs, a nod to its exceptional precision. The name stuck, mirroring the octagonal bezel that sits atop the case, resembling a laurel crown. Now, celebrating the Laureato’s 49th anniversary, Girard-Perregaux unveils the Laureato Chronograph Ti49.
The 42mm case stays true to the Laureato’s iconic design language. The interplay of the octagonal bezel, circular plinth, and tonneau-shaped case creates a captivating play of light and shadow. The use of Grade 5 titanium adds a new dimension to this intricate design, with its warm hue and contrasting finishes. Brushed surfaces juxtaposed with polished highlights – on the plinth, case edges, chronograph pushers, and bracelet links – create a visually stunning effect.

The monochromatic theme continues onto the dial. A grey canvas with a Clous de Paris pattern is adorned with matching grey PVD-treated hands and indexes, all generously coated with white luminescent material for low-light visibility. Three snailed sub-dials for chronograph functions and a date window complete the functional layout. White accents on the GP logo, name, and dial markings ensure excellent readability.
Housed within this lightweight titanium case is the Manufacture Calibre GP03300, a self-winding movement with 419 components. This exquisite mechanism boasts a variety of traditional decorative techniques, including Côtes de Genève, circular graining, satin finishing, and blued steel screws. Each finishing touch is a testament to the exceptional skills of Girard-Perregaux’s watchmakers.
The Laureato Chronograph Ti49 stands as a culmination of generations of innovation. It is a timepiece that bridges the past with the present, a testament to the enduring legacy of both Jean-François Bautte and the discovery of titanium.
The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph Ti49 retails at RM89,500 and is available at selected The Hour Glass boutiques in Malaysia.
