The Macallan A Night On Earth – The Journey at The Starhill, Kuala Lumpur

The Macallan recently unveiled the second instalment of the Macallan A Night on Earth series, ‘A Night on Earth – The Journey’ at their pop-up experience at The Starhill in Kuala Lumpur. This special release is inspired by the journey of rejoining with loved ones, as well as the unique moments when we come together around the world. This limited edition, housed in a creative, multi-layered pack meticulously developed in collaboration with prominent Chinese mixed-media artist Nini Sum, promises an unforgettable unboxing experience. Each layer of the pack is rich with significance, wonderfully depicting the various phases of the journey to reunite with loved ones for the New Year celebrations.

The first layer shows a wide-open terrain: on the left is a night sky full of stars and fireworks, while on the right is a view of mountains covered in clouds during the day. Contrast and surprise are produced by the second layer’s blue colour scheme and modern urban landscape. Vibrant bursts of colour represent the masses of people leaving the city to visit friends and family. The third layer represents the cosiness of lantern light and the sense of returning home with its yellow and orange hues.

This limited-edition whisky was crafted from a perfectly balanced blend of whisky aged in The Macallan’s exceptional sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, as well as American ex-bourbon barrels. The flavour profile brings back some of Nini Sum’s festive New Year’s memories, including the delightful aroma of steamed rice pudding and the exuberant burst of fireworks. The smell coming from the carts of rice popcorn vendors on Shanghai’s brightly decorated streets is like toasted oak. The whisky has a nuttiness that echoes the sunflower seeds Nini’s family used to share while they laughed and shared their wishes for the new year.

Upon entering, you will be greeted by a colourful, creatively arranged gallery wall featuring Nini Sum’s designs, which replicate the top layer of the collection’s packaging. The artwork showed a wide-open panorama: on the left was a night sky full of stars and fireworks; on the right was a scene of daytime mountains covered in clouds. This striking display provided an engrossing sneak peek at the collection’s thematic journey, setting the scene for The Macallan A Night On Earth – The Journey.

The collection’s second layer of packaging design will be revealed as you navigate an immersive tunnel decorated with a variety of urban textures. The tunnel’s eye-catching blue colour scheme complemented the modern urban landscape, which featured lively colour pops and subdued traffic noises. These components captured the spirit of the journey as they travelled to be with family and friends, symbolising the frantic mass movement of locals leaving the city.

After the captivating tunnel journey, you will arrive at the modern home entrance, giving you the sensation of reaching home. The elegant tasting area beyond the entrance symbolises the cosy glow of lantern light and the cosy feeling of returning home. It has been designed to blend modern elegance with warmth in a seamless manner. This well-designed area created a calming and welcoming atmosphere for the visitors by reflecting the third layer of the collection’s packaging.
