Embraer’s Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 Complete 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Flight Tests

Embraer announced on 15 October 2023 in Florida, USA that it has successfully tested the Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 on 100% neat sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The tests, involving one engine running on 100% SAF, were conducted at Embraer’s Melbourne site and gave substantial insight into system performance when using mixes up to 100% SAF provided by World Fuel. The engine and fuel system vendors Honeywell Aerospace, Parker, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Safran worked together on the testing.

The usage of SAF is an important aspect of Embraer’s commitment to sustainability, and this milestone highlights the company’s commitment to adapting its current products to be as sustainable as possible while also pushing its adoption among customers and the industry. SAF is a renewable energy source that can lower greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% when compared to regular jet fuel, making it a vital component of Embraer’s goals of reaching carbon-neutral operations by 2040 and assisting the aerospace industry in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

“We are proud to have successfully flown the Phenom 300E and Praetor 600 on 100% neat SAF, an important step as our operators are increasingly interested in and adopting this fuel. This achievement is an important milestone in our journey towards net-zero emissions by 2050 and demonstrates our commitment to sustainability, our customers and our stakeholders.”

Michael Amalfitano, Embraer Executive Jets President and CEO

Currently, all Embraer aircraft are approved to use a blend of up to 50% of SAF mixed with conventional Jet Fuel, based on ASTM International specifications. However, future requirements that allow for fuels containing up to 100% SAF have the potential to maximise emissions reductions by utilising sustainable, non-fossil-based sources.

Embraer’s commitment to sustainability is central to its business strategy, and the company is constantly looking for novel approaches to lessen its environmental effects. The flights of the Phenom 300 and Praetor 600 on 100% clean SAF are significant milestones in these efforts, and Embraer will continue to work towards a more sustainable future for the aviation industry through additional efforts such as research and development of low- and zero-emission alternative propulsion systems such as electrification, hybrid-electric, and hydrogen.
