Sustainable Buffet at Makan Kitchen, DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur

DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur recently announced the launch of its groundbreaking sustainability Dinner Buffet programme at Makan Kitchen, which will set new benchmarks for environmentally aware eating experiences.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme in 2021, Malaysia had the greatest yearly garbage per capita in Southeast Asia, with 91kg of rubbish generated per person. To fight this, the DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur is committed to strengthening local sourcing and minimising food waste, in line with Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals of reducing food waste sent to trash by 50%.

Sustainable procurement from local organic suppliers such as Cultiveat, recipes of change, and waste reduction are among the highlights of Makan Kitchen’s Sustainable Buffet. The hotel is consistently making progress by acquiring ingredients from MSC and ASC certified fisheries, as well as cage-free eggs. Seafood on ice, marinated farmed white perch, roasted free-range chicken in coconut cream, and locally sourced sea bass varuval are among the new menu highlights. These efforts not only encourage responsible fishing practices, but also enhance animal welfare.

A significant trend has begun towards sourcing local produce from within a 50-mile radius. This commitment to local sourcing cuts food-related emissions dramatically. Furthermore, the hotel is actively aiming to reduce plastic use throughout its business operations. Guests can expect a carefully crafted food selection that promotes sustainability and is also pleasing to the tastebuds.

To strengthen philanthropic giving, DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur is cooperating with Voice For Paws on a stray feeding programme as part of this campaign. Furthermore, any leftovers from the buffet will be composted and reused as organic fertilisers for local consumption, ensuring that nothing goes to waste.

The Sustainable Buffet at Makan Kitchen will be available every Tuesday to Saturday, from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM. Prices vary depending on the day, with Tuesday to Thursday dinners priced at RM 118.00nett per adult and RM 59.00nett per child, while Friday and Saturday dinners are offered at RM 148.00nett per adult and RM 74.00nett per child.

I’m quite selective about the buffets I visit however Makan Kitchen in DoubleTree Kuala Lumpur is one that I rarely decline as I’m quite a fan of their Indian food section. As I’m an advocate for sustainability and conservation, I greatly applaud this initiative by the hotel to reduce waste and their carbon footprint! It is my sincere hope that many other hotels will also follow this example!
