SHUCKED Oyster Festival at Southern Rock Seafood, Bangsar

Mikasa and I headed over to Southern Rock Seafood in Bangsar for the SHUCKED Oyster Festival on 6 May 2018. The festival was done “Hari Kantin” style where you had to buy cash vouchers at the counter before going around to the various booths to spend them.

We got to enjoy some of the finest oysters from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, premium smoked salmon, wild-caught fish and mussels, and more. The price of the fresh Atlantic Ocean oysters started at only RM6 a piece, and the patrons had a great time ordering tray after tray of freshly shucked oysters with a lovely umami flavour!

We also witnessed the semi-finals of the Malaysian Oyster Shucking Championships, where Fizly Bin Norazlan, 2017 Malaysian National SHUCKING champion, who represented Malaysia at the World SHUCK- off in Galway, Ireland was defending his title against a strong field. Irish oyster grower, Edward Gallagher, was on hand to judge the shucking (oyster opening) competition and talk about the pristine waters of Donegal.

The festival was a warm up for the full-scale SHUCKED Oyster Festival on Sunday, 2 September 2018, which will feature the Malaysian Shucking Finals, a wide range of seafood and other premium foods, several bands, and more in the huge empty lot opposite Southern Rock Seafood Kitchen & Retail.

The SHUCKED Oyster festival was family friendly with Stanley the Clown keeping the kids entertained, while live jazz music, and graffiti artist Iam May completed her mega oyster doodle in real-time.

The chef preparing the giant seafood paella
Took a while but it was finally ready! The secret to this delicious paella was lots of white wine and chef’s special saffron sauce!
A lovely plate of freshly made paella!
Fish and chips
Salmon and a seafood pate with toast
And of course lots of really fresh and tasty oysters!
The semi-finals of the oyster shucking competition was pretty intense to watch as competitors tried to do each other in terms of speed and presentation
Live music to keep us entertained

Shanghai Night at SkyBar, Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur

After the first edition of Shanghai Night at Skybar, Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur back  in 2017 (where I celebrated my birthday, and which you can read about here – https://timchew.net/2017/11/10/editors-note-november-2017/), Skybar had their 2nd edition of Shanghai Night on 28 April 2018.

On hand were two (2) guest mixologists – Angel Ng and Glen Oliver who prepared some delicious Hennessy cocktails, while on the decks were hot and sexy DJs Von, Frannie Luv and Jodie who provided the beats which had the very up for it crowd happily dancing the night away on the dancefloor.

Look out for the 3rd edition which will happen later this year!
