Seafood Brunch at Shook! Starhill Gallery Kuala Lumpur

[Review]

Amy and I headed over to Shook! in Starhill Gallery Kuala Lumpur to try out their Seafood Brunch which is on every Sunday from 12.00noon to 3.00pm. The brunch is buffet style where you can help yourself to the variety of seafood and other dishes for RM188 nett per person or RM238 per person inclusive of free flow of prosecco, wine, beer or cocktails.

Shook! is one of the first restaurants in Kuala Lumpur to feature the open-kitchen concept to give guests an interactive, engaging and sensory dining experience with display counters and show kitchens which allow you to watch the chefs in action. Towards the back, there’s also a private room furnished by Armani/Casa offers celebrities and VIPs while wine buffs would be glad to know that the wine cellar holds the largest Mouton Rothschild wine collections from 1945 to 2000. There’s a live jazz band performances every night and also for the Sunday brunch!

The buffet is a real treat for seafood lovers as there’s a myriad of fresh seafood including oysters, slipper lobster, yabbies, mussels, clams and prawns which you can eat fresh with the various condiments and sauces. Amy though was really creative and filled a plate with fresh seafood then passed it to the chef at the pasta station to incorporate in her pasta! The result was a freshly made seafood carbonara!

Apart from the fresh seafood, there’s also the afore-mentioned pasta station, pizza, risotto, bread baskets, cold cuts and condiments, duck rice (yes duck rice which was extremely popular with guests!), grilled lamb and various grilled meats such as beef and salmon, sushi, sashimi, teppanyaki, salad (with a huge cheese wheel!), appetisers, smoked salmon, and my favourite – the cheese board!

For dessert, there’s a wide variety of cakes, puddings and sweets, not to mention ice cream and a chocolate fountain! End your meal with a nice hot cup of coffee/ tea as you lie back and listen to the jazz band.

Here’s a look at what we had that afternoon:

Prosecco to accompany the food! Went great with the seafood!

A jazz band performed some relaxing numbers to set the mood for a lazy Sunday afternoon
It wasn’t empty for long. In fact, it was pretty much full so I’d advise calling ahead to place reservations to avoid disappointment.

The oysters were a big hit among guests. The restaurant refills them periodically though so fret not.
Fresh salmon for grilling. Just pass them to the chef and he’ll do the rest.

To our great surprise, the duck and chicken rice was extremely popular among guests and we had to patiently wait for it to be refilled to try some!

For you sweettooths out there, you’re going to be dazzled by the array of sweet treats in the dessert section! The macaron tower was very popular and I liked their peanut butter macaron as it wasn’t sweet!

I must say that this buffet is pretty good value for money with lots of premium offerings like fresh seafood, smoked salmon, and sashimi! I particularly liked the cheese board and cold cuts as well as the grilled lamb (apart from the fresh oysters of course)! In fact, pretty much all the dishes were pretty decent which is rare for buffets where quantity is normally the priority over quality.

The sheer amount of seafood and other dishes available makes this a very tantalising affair indeed and that’s probably why the restaurant was pretty full during our visit with couples, groups of friends, as well as families enjoying the spread. Go at 12noon then slowly enjoy your meal while the live jazz band entertains you. I would highly suggest though that you make reservations prior to your visit to avoid disappointment as the buffet is very popular indeed!
