When you talk about Skin Specialists in Malaysia, the name Ko Skin Specialist would probably come up as they are well established in the country for almost two (2) decades. From its humble beginnings in 1997, Ko Skin Specialist has grown to become one of Asia’s leading dermatology and laser centers. Ko Skin Specialist was founded by Dr. Ko Chung Beng in 1997, and provides a comprehensive range of in-depth services from dermatology to cosmetic surgery at its many centres throughout the country.

Recently, I was invited to the Ko Skin Specialist HQ in Klang for the launch of the new Fotona’s NightLase® therapy which is a non-invasive, patient-friendly laser treatment for increasing the quality of a patient’s sleep. NightLase reduces the effects of sleep apnea and decreases the amplitude of snoring by means of a gentle, laser-induced tightening effect caused by the contraction of collagen in the oral mucosa tissue.

In simple terms, it is a safe and effective treatment designed to addressed the issue of snoring when you sleep through the use of a medical laser to tighten the muscles in your oral passage allowing more air to move through more freely!

The treatment uses Fotona’s patented Er:YAG laser that optimizes the length of laser pulses, allowing for the safe penetration of heat into the oral mucosa tissue. It is gentle enough to be used on the sensitive tissue inside the mouth, but strong enough to provide clinically efficacious heating. NightLase has a high success rate in producing a positive change in sleep patterns, and research has shown that NightLase reduces and attenuates snoring and provides an effective, non-invasive way to lessen the effects of sleep apnea.

A full course of NightLase consists of three (3) separate treatment sessions over a six week period. The final results of the treatment have been shown to last up to a year, and the therapy can be repeated. Patients find NightLase to be a highly comfortable and satisfying solution that doesn’t require any device to be worn during sleep and involves no chemical treatment.

The NightLase procedure is performed in two simple steps:

STEP 1 : Preconditioning: The laser light preheats the tissue.

STEP 2 : Tissue strengthening: Laser light strengthens the tissue.

The treatment itself doesn't really hurt, it's just a warm sensation in your throat. However the tiring bit is to keep your mouth open throughout the session. And every couple of minutes they let me take a rest to close my mouth for a while before continuing.

The treatment ended up taking slightly more than 30 minutes as I rested my mouth a couple of times during the session. It was a bit tiring but hey for the benefit it was giving I didn’t mind at all. I was advised to drink lots of water and avoid spicy foods for the next few days which I did. The lingering sensation in my throat felt like a mild case of sore throat but thankfully (and as expected) it subsided after two days (although I would recommend though that you don’t go for karaoke or to a concert where you’re gonna be shouting your lungs out for a couple of days after) after which I did drink more water anyway just in case.

The result after a single treatment is not huge, although I do find that I sleep more soundly as my air passageways are less blocked, and there are less complains about my snoring ha ha! For a fully effective treatment, you’ll need at least three (3) sessions to see a big effect.
