Montblanc and Samsung collaborate yet again in conjunction with the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. To celebrate the launch of the two (2) new Samsung smartphones, Montblanc unveiled the Montblanc Tattoo Cover Limited Edition covers which are limited to just 100 pieces featuring tattoos made by hand with Montblanc ink. The Montblanc covers were previewed during the Samsung Unpacked event at the IFA in Berlin from 4th to 8th September 2015, alongside Samsung’s technological innovations.
This new collection is the result of the successful Samsung and Montblanc’s partnership initiated a year ago, when the two brands introduced “fine writing into the digital world” through the unveiling of Montblanc’s first Screenwriter collections compatible with Samsung Galaxy Note’s technology. This was followed soon after by a new generation of smart leather covers specifically designed for Samsung smartphone creations.
The collaboration between Montblanc and Samsung was motivated by a mutual willingness to pioneer new mobile luxury experience frontiers through the fusion of Samsung cutting edge technology and Montblanc´s unique know how in leather and fine writing.
Tattoos were originally used in ancient times as amulets or talismans, but throughout the millennia have become the ultimate form of artistic self-expression among modern societies, making a blend of modernism and tradition in the present-day. In this sense it exemplifies the collaboration between Montblanc and Samsung, a combination between centuries old savoir faire and cutting edge technology.
The tattoo design inspired by the image of a hot air balloon, and pays tribute to the pioneering spirit of Montblanc’s founders who, more than a century ago, travelled across the world to explore new writing techniques and present Montblanc writing instruments to the world.
Every single cover is made from carefully selected artisanal tanned leather, cut and crafted by Montblanc leather artisans in Italy, then individually hand-tattooed by London based tattoo artist Mo Coppoletta, using genuine Montblanc ink.
Tattooing into leather requires even more skills than normal tattooing due to the nature of the tan itself. Mastering the technique of tattooing on leather requires years of patience and dedication in order to achieve a precise standard of execution. The leather easily stains, cuts, bruises, therefore every stroke of the tattoo machine needs to be decisive yet delicate at the same time.
The use of Montblanc Ink makes the covers even more valuable and desirable, as the precious liquid is rarely used to perform tattoo artistry due to the price. All in all, each cover requires up to two hours of tattoo work to be completed.
The Montblanc Tattoo line is the flagship of an exciting new collection of covers specifically developed for Samsung’s new smartphone models. Multiple cover variations will be available in Montblanc boutiques and selected Samsung shops worldwide. The Hard Shells and Flip covers feature card slots, and are made from several genuine leather types to fit different styles.
Covers will be available in two (2) variants of sophisticated black Soft Grain leather with its naturally soft touch; Montblanc Extreme leather – a high performance material developed by Montblanc to withstand the toughest conditions, as well as Sartorial leather – an elegant and durable Saffiano leather. There will also be the special black alligator printed calfskin version of the covers available exclusively on Montblanc websites.
For the Maison Montblanc, being intensively active in the patronage of art and culture, underlining tattoo savoir faire was an opportunity to invite the world to discover the beauty of tattoo craftsmanship. “Montblanc´ s origins lie in writing with ink on paper, tattoo is about writing with ink on skin. Fusing these two gestures using Montblanc’s manufacture leather competence as a canvas was a natural step for the Maison to create this collection.” said Zaim Kamal, Montblanc Creative Director.
Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, IT& Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics remarked; “Samsung has a long history of designer partnership and these dynamic collaborations allow consumers to express their personal style through the seamless combination of the designer brand’s heritage with the latest technology. Samsung is pleased to bring this special partnership inspired by Montblanc’s traditional artistic heritage and sophisticated know-hows of leather and fine writing.”
A complete range of new covers to dress the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 with style Montblanc Tattoo covers will exclusively be available online on selected Samsung channels and on Montblanc.com from September 2015.
