Headed over to Marini’s on 57 on 5 November 2014 for the Nikka Whisky Cocktail Tasting session featuring six (6) specially designed whisky cocktails only available on the night.

In 1918, Masataka Taketsuru embarked alone on a long voyage to Scotland to study chemistry at the University of Glasgow. He was the very first Japanese ever to study the art of whisky making and apprenticed at distilleries, learning first-hand from craftsmen and receiving training as a blender. In 1920 Masataka returned to Japan with Jessie Roberta (Rita), whom he had married earlier that year, and joined a company that aspired to make genuine whisky in Japan. He succeeded in producing Japan’s first whisky., however as Masataka’s vision of whisky was formed by his experience in Scotland, and he knew that the right environment was essential.

Thus to produce the whisky the way he wanted,  Masataka established Nikka Whisky in 1934, and built its first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido. The distillery was rather inconveniently located, however Masataka considered to be the ideal site in Japan for whisky-making, similar in many ways to the Scottish town where he had studied. Rita stayed with Masataka and supported him in his whisky venture until her passing in 1961. Masataka passed on in 1979 and was buried together with his wife Rita in Yoichi making it quite a remarkable tale of whisky and love.

Today, Masataka’s legacy lives on through Nikka whisky which is internationally acclaimed and is distributed globally.

Nikka has two (2)  malt whisky distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Yoichi produces rich, peaty and masculine malt. The whisky gets its distinct aroma and body from direct heating distillation, in which the pot stills are heated with finely powdered natural coal–the traditional method that is hardly ever used today, even in Scotland.

The Miyagikyo distillery on the other hand, is dedicated to the memory of Masataka’s wife and makes more delicate whiskies. The location was selected for whisky production because of its clean air, just the right humidity for storage, and abundant underground water filtered through a layer of peat. In Yoichi, Masataka Taketsuru saw numerous reminders of Scotland, and this convinced him that this should be the home of Japanese Whisky.

The Yin & Yang of Nikka Whisky concept is based on the Nikka Whisky’s story, and we got to try whiskies from both distilleries, three (3) more masculine cocktails designed to highlight the more masculine malts, and three more feminine cocktails designed to highlight the more delicate whiskies.

Mixologist, Yin Ying created the cocktails based on whiskies made mainly from Miyagikyo, while Junior prepared with a twist some classic cocktails based on Yoichi whiskies.

Yin Ying’s Cocktails:

THE ADVENTURE – Nikka Coffey Grain, Pear Juice, Liquorice Syrup, Lemon Juice, Xocolatyl.

NIWA 1969 – Nikka Miyagikyo 12 Years, Green Tea, Strawberry Preserve, Oleo Saccharum, Lime Juice.

POPCORN – Nikka Pure Malt Red, Salted Caramel Sauce, Orange Syrup, Egg White, Lemon Juice.

Junior’s Cocktails:

WHITE MALT SOUR – Nikka Pure Malt White, Lemon Juice, Honey Syrup, Ginger Espuma

SPICE SPACE – Nikka From The Barrel, Cinnamon Water.

PEACHY OLD FASHIONED – Yoichi 12 Years, Peach Syrup, Orange Bitter

Of course I preferred the more masculine cocktails like the  Spice Space and Peachy Old Fashioned however (as expected) the girls preferred the more feminine cocktails. Nikka also gave away some special whisky glasses for every purchase of two (2) bottles of Nikka whisky.
