[Watch & Timepiece]
MHB’s Naomi Tham and I headed over to Bangsar Baru in Kuala Lumpur on 21 June 2014 on a very bright and sunny morning for the launch The Watch Atelier which is a new luxury watch boutique in a standalone marble and sandstone building along the busy Jalan Maarof.
Billed as Malaysia’s first gentlemen’s lounge with elegant sofas and features antique books, firearms, animal taxidermy and of course high-end timepieces, The Watch Atelier sets itself apart from the rest by positioning itself as a lifestyle gallery rather than a conventional watch shop. The boutique aims to be more than just a gathering point of watch collectors but also hopes to entice art lovers from across Malaysia, and to achieve this, the boutique carries more than just exquisite and rare timepieces but also art pieces and even Reuge Music Boxes.
The Watch Atelier is a showcase and a point of sale for timepieces beyond the usual mainstream brands. Brand Principals from Arnold & Son; Manufacture Contemporaine du Temps, Custom-Rolex makers, Blaken; Pierre DeRoche and U-Boat were on hand to offer technical explanations and conduct demonstrations of the various haute horlogerie on display including high complications like dual tourbillon escapements and a time-prism concept.

The Watch Atelier also carries Reuge, the last maker of traditional mechanical music boxes. The RM450,000.00+ Olbia (pictured above), which is considered the “Ferrari of music boxes”, garnered a lot of attention from guests. Reuge’s CEO Kurt Kupper was kind enough to perform multiple demonstrations of the mechanical wonder by winding the heavy steel and rosewood standing music box which then played classic tunes like Weihnachts – Oratorium, Cembalo – konzert, Feuerwerksmusik and Wassermusik using its uniquely engineered brass and steel musical instruments. Now Reuge can also custom make the music tracks for you so you can have everything from Elvis Presley to Linkin Park and Mariah Carey. If you have the money, Reuge can even custom make your own music box and they have done so for heads of state and big corporations who want a gift to be unique and memorable.

Here’s a little video of the music box in action (BTW that’s not me asking the questions in the video nor Kurt Kupper explaining).
Above are the two timepieces that Naomi and I were admiring.
